The Washington Commanders needed more in the wide receiver room this offseason. After striking out with Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs over the early stages of free agency, general manager Adam Peters brought a familiar face back into the fold.

And the Commanders are paying $3 million for a movie they've already seen before.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Commanders have brought back Dyami Brown after one season away from the club that drafted him. The wideout left for the Jacksonville Jaguars last spring, but things did not go according to plan despite the AFC South franchise making a successful return to the postseason.

Commanders are gambling on Dyami Brown to finally put everything together

This move caught everyone off guard. Brown had his fans in Washington, but the production was always inconsistent. After turning it on down the stretch and into the playoffs in 2024, the Jaguars offered more than Peters was willing to pay on a new deal. Unfortunately for the 2021 third-round pick, it didn't take long to realize he wasn't going to match the price tag.

Brown found it difficult to carve out a prominent role for himself. When the Jaguars traded for Jakobi Meyers, he went firmly to the fringes. He was even a healthy scratch late in the year, a trend that carried into the postseason. Jacksonville was never going to bring him back, but Peters is willing to give him another chance to see if any untapped potential remains.

It's not costing the Commanders much to find out for sure. Brown's best football came late in 2024 when Kliff Kingsbury finally gave him a chance to shine. There is already developed chemistry with quarterback Jayden Daniels, but his fumble in the NFC Championship game left a sour taste in the mouth. Now, he's back for another go-around, but the margin for error has completely evaporated.

There will be no guarantees regarding Brown's role in 2026. The Commanders are expecting Luke McCaffrey and Jaylin Lane to improve. Treylon Burks re-signed. Washington also added Van Jefferson Jr. to the ranks. And these acquisitions won't preclude Peters from adding another prolific weapon in free agency or the draft, depending on what opportunities present themselves.

Brown will have familiarity on his side, though Kingsbury is no longer around. This should serve him well, but the Commanders will be watching his development closely before deciding on his role for the upcoming campaign.

If it doesn't work out, the Commanders can move on pretty quickly. Brown will be hoping it goes the other way, but expecting miracles would be unrealistic.
