Chig Okonkwo promises to be a fantastic asset to the tight end position after signing a three-year, $30 million contract with the Washington Commanders in free agency. But amid all the fanfare surrounding his arrival, he took time to offer a bullish outlook for one of his teammates.
Okonkwo has the athleticism and versatility to be the perfect replacement for veteran Zach Ertz, whose days with the organization are probably done. He's not the best blocker, but the Commanders don't need much of that from him with John Bates and Ben Sinnott also around. His primary role will be as a pass-catcher, capable of being deployed almost anywhere with significant yards after the catch capabilities.
The former Maryland standout arrives in Washington having spent the first four years of his career with the Tennessee Titans. He was in the same draft class as wide receiver Treylon Burks, and the pair now reunite in Washington.
Chig Okonkwo believes Commanders will see the best of Treylon Burks in 2026
When asked about Burks during his introductory press conference, Okonkwo was glowing in his praise. He believes that with a full offseason to rest and fully prepare, the Commanders will have a special player on their hands in 2026. And there is an opening to become a factor.
"I can't wait to see him fully show everybody what he can do. I've seen him at full health, full confidence. That man can play football. I'm telling you all that dude's a beast."
Okonkwo isn't going to say anything less about Burks, with whom he has a good relationship. But with the wideout signing a one-year, $4 million extension just before free agency, it's clear the Commanders also see some more untapped potential in the Arkansas product.
Staying healthy is key. Injuries decimated his chances of generating any consistent momentum in Tennessee, and they eventually pulled the plug on this costly experiment. The Commanders thought Burks could be salvaged, and the flashes demonstrated during his brief involvement were enough for another commitment.
Perhaps having a familiar face around, like Okonkwo, will only raise his comfort level. Burks remains ultra-confident in his abilities, but the Titans never looked like a good fit for him. There was also a lot of pressure on the pass-catcher to replace A.J. Brown after he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, which was always going to be a tall order.
The Commanders believe in him. Okonkwo has seen what he can do, and he's also confident Washington will see the best of Burks next season. If he can finally put everything together, the passing attack could be a surprise that some around the league don't see coming.
