Commanders quietly hold all the cards in Brandon Aiyuk drama nobody can stop

They are handling things perfectly.

The Washington Commanders are Brandon Aiyuk's preferred destination when the San Francisco 49ers eventually set the wide receiver free. That's the NFL's worst-kept secret at this point, but general manager Adam Peters is doing the right thing by waiting out his old employers rather than forcing the issue.

Peters could call his good friend John Lynch and work out a trade. That's what the Niners' general manager is supposedly holding out for, however unlikely that may be. Even a 2027 seventh-round pick would be better than nothing, which is why Aiyuk remains on the books.

Finding someone who'll agree to take on Aiyuk after everything that's gone on over the last year seems almost impossible. Perhaps this strategy is designed to lure Peters in to make another splash to seal the deal. He may have bitten this time last year, but things have changed.

Commanders and Brandon Aiyuk are playing their respective roles perfectly

There are too many concerns about Aiyuk's injury status. He may want to reunite with Jayden Daniels, and the quarterback has vouched heavily for him, but Peters is not going to take the plunge unless it's via free agency and with a deal in place that works for the team, too.

If Aiyuk is so desperate about joining the Commanders, as reports suggest, he'll do whatever it takes to get a chance. The Niners' clock is ticking. And even though there is a sense of pettiness attached after this relationship completely broke down, the facts of the matter are the same.

Peters has been around long enough to see this situation for what it is. He knows Aiyuk wants out. He also knows that Lynch has shown his hand by stating the 2020 first-round pick out of Arizona State has played his final game for the club. Patience is normally a virtue in the NFL, but it gives the Commanders a clear advantage in this instance.

Aiyuk is also playing it smart. He's staying quiet, for now. That might change when he gets the chance to put his side of the story out there, but the wideout is wise not to escalate emotions when he is so close to getting what he's probably desired from the moment Daniels came into the league as the No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.

This won't stop Peters from adding to the wideout unit. The Niners may not officially release him until June. Expect the Commanders to find another potentially prolific pass-catcher via the draft. And when Aiyuk does join, Washington's receiver room is going to look much more promising if he can return to the form of old.

Peters is playing chess while Lynch stews in his own bitterness. And everyone knows it.
