Brandon Aiyuk is waiting patiently for the San Francisco 49ers to finally cut him loose. Reports indicate that it isn't imminent, so the wide receiver and the Washington Commanders are in limbo until general manager John Lynch pulls the trigger.
According to a recent revelation from one Niners team insider, it's only delaying the inevitable. And Lynch knows it.
Aiyuk wants to leave. The Niners want to let him go. They could put a post-June 1 designation on his departure now, but Lynch wants to squeeze it out right until the last minute in the hope a willing trade suitor comes forward. That doesn't seem likely, and when he's released, the Commanders are his likeliest landing spot.
49ers know Brandon Aiyuk wants the Commanders, but they're dragging it out anyway
Nick Wagoner of ESPN agreed. He didn't believe a trade would be figured out. The reporter added that those within the Niners are well aware of Aiyuk's desire to reunite with quarterback Jayden Daniels, and considering San Francisco doesn't have any selections after the fourth round in this year's draft, a late-round pick swap is seemingly off the table.
Lynch has been accused of being vindictive and petty by holding onto Aiyuk. He's been stung by the player's behavior. Even though all signs point to the same thing, the front office leader wants to make things as difficult as possible.
Aiyuk is working out and wants to play. The Commanders are being sold on him by Daniels. Peters will know a lot about his character, having worked with him in San Francisco. It's being drawn out, which is Lynch's prerogative. But it may not prevent the preferred outcome for the 2020 first-round pick out of Arizona State.
The Niners will be trying to gauge if there is a market for Aiyuk, which seems unlikely. He missed the entire 2025 campaign due to injury. And though San Francisco should reportedly hold some of the blame, the wideout's actions haven't been looked upon favorably either.
This still represents a massive risk for the Commanders. ESPN insider John Keim said they are unlikely to trade for the pass-catcher, which is the right call. And if he is that desperate to link up with Daniels again, he may also be willing to accept a one-year, incentivized deal with the promise of more to come if everything goes well.
As for the Niners? They made contingencies. Mike Evans and Christian Kirk joined the ranks this offseason to offset Aiyuk's departure. Lynch might be letting emotions get in the way, but it won't matter.
Aiyuk will be released. And after that, he'll probably land on the Commanders.
