New reports or opinions are surfacing everywhere about wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk's situation with the San Francisco 49ers. It's incredibly messy, but all the Washington Commanders can do is wait if they are intent on bringing him to the franchise.

The Commanders are reportedly aware of Aiyuk's desire to reunite with quarterback Jayden Daniels. San Francisco probably knows this as well, but that doesn't mean general manager John Lynch won't make things as complicated as possible before eventually cutting ties.

When that'll be is anyone's guess. But a leading salary-cap analyst suggested that Aiyuk's saga with the Niners, which has become personal, is leading to emotional decisions that go way beyond football.

Salary-cap guru accuses 49ers of being vindictive to prevent Brandon Aiyuk joining the Commanders

Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac predicted Aiyuk's release for June 2. The Niners could easily release him right now with a post-June 1 designation, which led him to believe there was some vindictiveness on the club's part.

“He gets released on June 2nd, which is terrible by the way. That’s terrible because the 49ers can designate him a post-June 1 release right now… They will wait until June and wait until after the draft and make all the other teams make decisions without him being in the fold, including picks. Then they will release him and hope that he probably latches on somewhere at a very, very small contract for 2026.

"I think there’s a little bit of vindictiveness happening here, but I guess I understand it if things really got that sour.”

Aiyuk's just biding his time. Lynch laid his cards on the table from the moment he said the wideout had played his last game in San Francisco. The Niners are reportedly holding out hope a trade suitor can be found, but the injury history and some questionable decisions over the last year make that scenario unlikely.

ESPN team insider John Keim thought it was unlikely Washington would give up a late-round pick for Aiyuk, knowing they'd have the best chance of acquiring him once released. But until then, Lynch can be as petty as he likes with the player still under contract.

It's one of the more bizarre situations around the league in recent memory. Aiyuk supposedly wanted to play last season, but the Niners wanted to void the guarantees in his contract instead. The 2020 first-round pick out of Arizona State cut off all contact after that, fracturing his relationship with Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan for good.

Both sides should move on. But the Niners are not going to make things easy for Aiyuk in his quest to land with the Commanders. That much is obvious.
