Commanders quietly hand Terry McLaurin a burden only he can handle

The responsibilities are steep, not for the first time.

There is an enormous burden on wide receiver Terry McLaurin. The Washington Commanders are depending on their top offensive weapon to stay healthy and produce the goods, especially given there are so many unknowns behind him in the room.

Delivering is crucial.

Much has been made about the Commanders needing more at receiver. Some claim they are a McLaurin injury away from having the worst unit in the league, which is fair. Speculation remains about another productive option arriving before the 2026 season, but there is also confidence in the building around the fledgling hopefuls seeking more involvement.

Regardless, the wideout group will rise or fall with McLaurin.

Commanders' receiver group will go as far as Terry McLaurin takes them

He's the heartbeat that makes everything tick. Nothing much went right last season, and McLaurin is leading from the front to ensure the same doesn't happen again. While some are claiming this could be his last year in Washington, the former Ohio State standout is the main man until further notice.

Zachary Perelus of CBS Sports agrees. He acknowledged the difficulties McLaurin endured last season, largely due to injury. The analyst also highlighted just how integral his skill set will be to Washington's hopes of a bounce-back.

"[Terry] McLaurin had a difficult 2025, with his contract dispute spilling over into the preseason and injuries disrupting his year once he did get a deal done. Still, his precise route running, speed and ability to make difficult catches are vital for the Commanders, who lack proven options behind him."

This responsibility isn't lost on McLaurin.

He's among the alphas in Washington and has been for some time. He's been a model of consistency through the good times and the bad. His durability and consistency were not in question before last season. These rising doubts should provide all the motivation needed to excel this time around.

New offensive coordinator David Blough has big plans for McLaurin. The rookie play-caller will be leaning on the second-team All-Pro heavily, moving him around to exploit mismatches and making him the focal point. Another receiver with proven capabilities in the highest stakes would be beneficial, but it won't change who the top guy is.

It's McLaurin.

Staying healthy is crucial, but that goes for all the big-hitters expected to play important roles. McLaurin and quarterback Jayden Daniels weren't on the field together much last season, and that has to change. If they avoid any injury problems and rekindle the chemistry that took the league by storm in 2024, it won't take long for strides to arrive.

How much help McLaurin has alongside him right now is much more debatable. Unless someone steps up, this only increases the pressure on his shoulders.

But make no mistake; McLaurin is more than ready.
