There is excitement among the players about what David Blough's offensive scheme could bring to the Washington Commanders. And one team insider believes this could be the springboard for a forgotten draft pick to finally make his long-awaited statement.
There are many unknowns, of course. Blough is a rookie play-caller. He's got big fans around the league. Some respected figures are confident he can thrive, but until Commanders fans see it for themselves and what this offense will look like, the optimism cannot be anything other than cautious.
One thing most experts are expecting is a heavy dose of tight-end usage. The Commanders signed Chig Okonkwo to become their leading man after Zach Ertz left, but others could also be tasked with increased responsibilities. And for Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic, this may finally bring more out of Ben Sinnott.
Commanders insider hypes up Ben Sinnott for bigger role in David Blough's offense
The 2024 second-round pick has been something of an enigma since joining the Commanders. Even so, the team insider believes he could be among the biggest beneficiaries of Blough's system, especially if multiple tight-end sets are deployed frequently next season.
"Washington drafted [Ben] Sinnott in the second round in 2024, though he struggled to produce consistently in his two seasons behind [Zach] Ertz. But [David] Blough’s system provides him with a prime opportunity to be a key contributor.
"Blough’s offense will be an amalgamation of his own football influences, from Kliff Kingsbury to Kevin O’Connell to Ben Johnson, which means Washington could use a heavy dose of multiple tight end sets."

It's now or never for Sinnott. Kliff Kingsbury clearly didn't think much of him, so this may be the opportunity he's been waiting for. Blough also acknowledged that he's got a lot of hard work ahead, but the brief flashes of promise over his time in Washington to date mean all hope is not lost just yet.
Okonkwo is the top dog in terms of pass-catching. John Bates is the in-line blocker and one of the league's best. Sinnott is the third option, but if Blough plans to use different tight end formations and more 13 personnel (three tight ends), the former Kansas State college star could be in line for more work.
Sinnott is not a rookie anymore. The Commanders didn't take him at No. 53 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft to be a bit-part player. He's got to grow up and grow up quickly this offseason, so the urgency couldn't be much higher with a huge chance awaiting him.
What comes next is down to Sinnott.
He's got the athleticism, and Sinnott can block. Earning Blough's trust is the objective. Taking advantage of opportunities when they arrive is also crucial. Anything less, and his long-term future in Washington will look more uncertain than ever.
But if everything goes well, Sinnott may become a pleasant surprise at the best possible time.
