With the buzz around which prospects the Washington Commanders could select during the 2026 NFL Draft reaching new heights, one potential breakout star was quick to drop a subtle sign of life after a nightmare injury came at the worst possible time last season.
Luke McCaffrey was en route to securing Pro Bowl consideration as a kick returner before suffering a broken collarbone against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 9. Of course, this was the same disastrous game in which quarterback Jayden Daniels dislocated his elbow, effectively ending his campaign as well.
This brought McCaffrey's positive momentum to an abrupt halt. It also left Washington fans to wonder whether they would ever see the best of the wide receiver during his time with the club.
Luke McCaffrey working hard to improve chances of Commanders breakout
McCaffrey didn't get much involvement in the offensive rotation last season. His special teams work was first class, and there were flashes in the passing game. Something is still missing, but all hope is not lost if the No. 100 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft makes a full recovery.
And make no mistake; McCaffrey is already putting in the work.
The former Rice standout posted a video showing his progress on social media. McCaffrey was seen doing on-field work, focusing on agility and breaking out of his route stems. Fortunately, it wasn't a lower-body injury for the wideout, so there is a good chance that he can hit the ground running when Washington begins preparations for the new campaign.

This is a positive development. And there might be an opening for McCaffrey to earn extended involvement within offensive coordinator David Blough's new schematic concepts.
Reports suggest McCaffrey might be the frontrunner for the starting slot role in 2026. More help is coming, which will only raise the competition for places. A draft pick is essential at some stage, and there is also the potential of Brandon Aiyuk's arrival once his drawn-out, bitter saga with the San Francisco 49ers reaches a conclusion.
Even so, there probably won't be a better chance for McCaffrey to firmly establish himself.
We won't know if the broken collarbone is strong enough until McCaffrey goes through physical contact via padded practices and preseason games before the real action arrives. Until then, the versatile pass-catcher can continue to develop his skills and physical conditioning to reduce the risk of additional complications surfacing.
It's now or never for McCaffrey, and he's not going to go away quietly.
