This doesn't really fit the current situation.

The Washington Commanders are firmly focused on finding the right prospects to take the franchise forward during what promises to be a fascinating 2026 NFL Draft. But there is one lingering cloud hanging over the franchise that just won't go away.

And one NFL analyst believes he has the trade package to end the ongoing saga with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk once and for all.

Aiyuk is currently embroiled in a standoff with the San Francisco 49ers. Both sides have drawn a line in the sand, and neither is going to budge until they absolutely have to. Most in the NFL expect him to join the Commanders when he is eventually released, but that might not happen for months unless a willing trade suitor comes forward.

Commanders' projected trade idea for Brandon Aiyuk doesn't fit the current dynamic

If the Commanders want to force the issue, trading for Aiyuk gives them time to go through an extensive offseason workout program. That seems unlikely, according to reports, but that didn't stop Mark Morales-Smith of Sports Illustrated from touting a potential offer.

The analyst thought that a fourth-round pick and a seventh-round selection in exchange for Aiyuk and a sixth-rounder could be a win-win for all parties. And considering how bitter this situation has become, the Niners would likely jump at the chance.

"If Aiyuk is anywhere close to where he was in 2022 and 2023, this would be an absolute steal for the Commanders. He has true WR1 upside and would be acquired with a Day 3 pick to play opposite Terry McLaurin. It's not out of the realm of possibilities that he could surpass McLaurin as the WR1 in Washington if this deal goes down."

From the Commanders' standpoint, it's too much to give away.

General manager Adam Peters is not blessed with many draft selections. Sacrificing his fourth-rounder and swapping Day 3 picks doesn't seem feasible. Nobody around the league would be giving up that much, especially considering how much football he's missed and the financial ramifications of taking on his contract.

Peters will bide his time. He's not going to chase Aiyuk. If San Francisco releases him, and he's still keen on reuniting with quarterback Jayden Daniels, the Commanders could give him a shot. But until then, trading for the wideout is not an option.

Besides, some Niners insiders suggest compensation far less would be enough. San Francisco could be willing to accept a 2027 seventh-round pick, just so long as they get something. That will save them some blushes, though the organization is not without blame either.

The Commanders are unlikely to trade for Aiyuk, and certainly not at this projected price. But if the pass-catcher and Daniels are intent on linking up again, all Washington can do is wait.

And time is on their side.
