Mike Sainristil's second season did not go as well as his first. But confidence has not wavered in the building about his potential to become a big piece of the Washington Commanders' defensive puzzle.
ESPN insider John Keim revealed that the coaching staff still believes Sainristil has the scope to make significant improvements within Daronte Jones' new system. The 2024 second-round pick is also seen as a great scheme fit in more zone, which is what Washington's incoming defensive coordinator is expected to run.
"He had a strong rookie season, playing inside and outside. But he struggled to maintain consistency in his second season. He has shown a penchant for takeaways with six interceptions. The coaches believe his ability to play with good vision makes him a good fit in a defense that will feature more zone."

Sainristil gave up a lot of big plays last season. He managed to gain a lot of takeaways, but they masked a lot of his problems. The defensive instability didn't do him any favors, to put it mildly. But with the Commanders making some substantial improvements on defense throughout a busy offseason, the chances for a bounce-back are high.
It's all about finding some middle ground for Sainristil. The interceptions are nice, but consistency is much more important. He got takeaways because teams were targeting him heavily, and most got a lot of joy out of doing so. That has to change in a crucial Year 3 for the Michigan product.
The Commanders have some questions to answer in their cornerback room. Trey Amos is still missing after suffering a fractured fibula last season. Amik Robertson, Rasul Douglas, and Ahkello Witherspoon were signed in free agency, but just how much they'll move the needle remains to be seen. Sainristil also has doubters to answer, so a pivotal training camp awaits.
There is a new scheme to learn. It might suit Sainristil, but he still has to pick things up quickly.
Jones has an exceptional reputation for developing defensive backs. He sees something in Sainristil, so it would be a big disappointment if improvements didn't arrive. And it might also be worth keeping him on the outside rather than flip-flopping moving forward.
Having this versatility is nice, but it can disrupt flow and continuity. Sainristil will do whatever it takes to help the team. Still, giving him a spot to excel is arguably the best possible outcome.
Sainristil can play. And with Jones now around to aid his progress, it's all systems go again.
