Von Miller chose the Washington Commanders over other willing suitors last year. That turned out to be a mistake, especially given that the Seattle Seahawks were also reportedly in the running.
They won a Super Bowl while the Commanders mustered just five wins. Miller recently admitted that was a grave error, but the future Pro Football Hall of Famer is now dropping breadcrumbs about backing the wrong horse yet again.
Miller posted a photo of himself in a Dallas Cowboys uniform on Instagram, with some emojis attached. This caused an inevitable stir, but whether it was trolling or something of more substance remains to be seen.
Commanders shouldn't lose any sleep if Von Miller joins the Cowboys
Either way, the Commanders have rightfully moved on.
The Commanders felt Miller could provide a boost to their pass-rushing depth chart last season. They were coming off an NFC Championship game appearance with a superstar quarterback who took the league by storm as a rookie. This tipped the scales in Washington's favor, but fans don't need reminding of what came next.
General manager Adam Peters had to get younger and more dynamic this offseason. Miller is none of those things, and even though he is not ready to call time on his glittering career as yet, another opportunity hasn't arrived.
Miller knows how to prepare effectively. He doesn't need to go through a full training camp, but the sooner he gets signed, the better. This might be his last year before retirement, so better judgment is required. If that's the Cowboys, he might be in for another disappointment.
The Cowboys are talented, but they are perennial underachievers. They get hyped up beyond comprehension every offseason by the national media, and they always fail to meet expectations. It's been three decades since Dallas made the NFC title game, but things at least look stable enough behind the scenes.
If Miller believes the Cowboys have a shot to enter legitimate Super Bowl contention in a loaded conference, he might be willing to give it a shot if the interest is mutual. But much like his decision to join the Commanders last year, this potential switch may have an ill-fated end.
And after that, Miller may be out of ring-chasing opportunities.
Miller can still rush the passer, though he is not the game-changing force of old. He cannot defend the run, is slower to react than in his prime, and the trajectory is descending. Should he end up in Dallas, the Commanders know precisely how to expose his weaknesses.
This might have been nothing more than keeping his name out there in the headlines. But if Miller does end up in Dallas, nobody in Washington should be losing much sleep.
If anything, it should work to their advantage.
