The Washington Commanders had some difficult conundrums to solve in their wide receiver room during final cuts. There was a surplus of dependable options, and general manager Adam Peters only had so many places to go around.
Fans were eagerly anticipating the decisions that would be made and what dominoes would fall. Some positions on the squad were set in stone, but surprises could emerge depending on conversations among those in positions of power.
That proved to be the case with Van Jefferson Jr.
Van Jefferson Jr. should feel unfortunate to miss out on Commanders roster
According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Commanders have released Jefferson before the final-cut deadline. The former Florida standout had a productive summer, but Washington eventually preferred others when it came to the crunch.
This was always going to be a numbers game for the Commanders.
Terry McLaurin, Stefon Diggs, and third-round rookie Antonio Williams were roster locks. Jaylin Lane has special-teams value, and the club obviously still believes in Treylon Burks. That didn't leave much room for the rest, and Jefferson was deemed surplus to requirements just as momentum was starting to build.
It's a disappointing outcome for Jefferson. But it was starting to look precarious the longer Washington went into the preseason.
Jefferson was active for Washington's warm-up finale against the Baltimore Ravens, which is never a good sign. Unfortunately, that proved to be the case, and he will now face an anxious wait to see if the practice squad or something else beckons.
Of course, the Commanders' receiver surplus may not have gone unnoticed by others around the league. Teams are always looking for ways to bolster their receiver ranks. Jefferson has some encouraging previous production to call upon, which might be enough to make a roster elsewhere.
Peters was always going to make some tough choices to trim the wideouts. It was a nice problem for him to have, but it was a problem all the same. Jefferson probably felt he'd done enough to make it, but the Commanders had other ideas.
Although disappointing, a lot can and will change over the next couple of days around the NFL.
Jefferson has enough talent; he's shown that throughout Washington's preparations for the 2026 campaign. It wasn't quite enough to crack the Commanders' roster, but attention now turns to what comes next.
It's a tough business at times. Jefferson has found that out to his cost, not for the first time in his professional career.
