Speculation continues to rise that the Washington Commanders could make a move for wide receiver Stefon Diggs to ease concerns in the room. General manager Adam Peters is reportedly monitoring the situation, but he's also eager to see what those around can do over the opening stages of training camp.
It's been a mixed bag so far. However, there are growing signs that Jaylin Lane might be on the way to more involvement in Year 2 of his professional career.
Lane reportedly looked the part during the first practice in front of fans. He's a fluid mover who is improving his concentration. His elusiveness with the football in his hands is impressive, as evidenced by his two touchdowns on punt returns during his rookie season.

More will be required to carve out a role on the offensive rotation, but Lane is working hard to get noticed.

The Commanders need all the help they can get alongside Terry McLaurin. They have several breakout hopefuls and a couple of veterans looking to galvanize their careers. Peters won't hesitate to find more if he believes it's required, but not making a move as yet suggests a sense of satisfaction with the way things are unfolding.
Washington saw something in Lane. Opportunities were scarce in Year 1, but he still managed to make an impact in the return game. Being around the setup last season gave him some useful experience, and he's got a little extra bounce in his step this summer.
It remains a precarious situation for Lane. He's still buried down the depth chart, but all hope is not lost just yet.
The Commanders would be wise to get Lane more involved in the preseason, throwing a lot of targets his way. That will give them the signs needed to see how far along the Virginia Tech product is and whether he can be trusted in key moments.
The looming cloud of Diggs still hangs over the Commanders. He'd be a better short-term option than anything outside of McLaurin, but Peters also wants to trust those Washington is drafting and developing.
Lane is among them. But turning these fleeting moments into something more remains his key objective.
Others are also looking to force their way into the team's plans. The battle for places is fierce, and it's a constant evaluation for Peters, head coach Dan Quinn, and offensive coordinator David Blough.
There will be a lot of twists and turns to come. But now, Lane has given himself a fighting chance of securing an increased role in 2026.
