When Stefon Diggs missed the first day of the Washington Commanders' practice before their Week 5 game against the New York Giants, most thought it was a veteran rest day. However, the wide receiver's injury designation was much more concerning.
Diggs was listed as a non-participant with a hamstring issue. The severity hasn't been disclosed, but with second-team All-Pro wideout Terry McLaurin dealing with the same ailment, it's not hard to see why fans are panicking a bit.
If one or both are missing at Northwest Stadium this weekend, that's a big problem.
Commanders face an anxious wait amid Stefon Diggs' hamstring concern
And given the impact Diggs has made in a short time, not having him available would be a major setback.
The former Maryland star got his homecoming wish this offseason. Diggs signed a team-friendly deal to make this dream a reality, and he instantly won over everyone in the franchise with his work ethic and leadership.
Diggs backs this up on the field, too.
He might not be the All-Pro-caliber performer of old, which is understandable at this late stage of his playing career, but Diggs is a highly useful pass-catcher. He's getting open consistently and making tough catches in key moments. It doesn't matter who is under center; he always seems to come through.
Obviously, this is a situation worth monitoring.
The Commanders may have been cautious with Diggs on the first day of practice before potentially ramping things up later in the week. But if he's limited or not practicing at all Thursday and Friday, his chances of missing Week 5 will only increase.
Commanders need Stefon Diggs healthy with Jayden Daniels returning
With quarterback Jayden Daniels set to return this weekend, he needs all the help he can get. Diggs is a supreme security blanket all over the field, and with McClaurin also fighting to get back involved after missing Washington's international game, losing both to injury would be less than ideal.
The Commanders had no fewer than 23 players on their injury report at the start of the week. Most of those were listed as full or limited participants, but the organization has to disclose everything. But for Diggs, it's clearly a race against time to shake off his hamstring issue.

And the Commanders don't have much time if they want to turn their season around.
Diggs is an indispensable member of Washington's offensive plans. He's a four-time Pro Bowler who has seen and done it all. He won't want to waste this year, and with so much at stake for the Commanders against a fierce division rival, he'll push hard to feature.
But until fans see him on the field, it's an anxious wait for everyone involved.
The Commanders are slowly starting to get healthy. Trey Amos, Deatrich Wise Jr., and Jeremy McNichols had their 21-day return windows opened this week. Sam Cosmi and Nick Cross could rejoin Daniels in the lineup after two games on the shelf. The crisis is easing slightly, so the last thing head coach Dan Quinn needs is Diggs out.
Hopefully, it won't come to that. But it's a wait-and-see scenario with no final outcome confirmed as yet.
