Terry McLaurin is out for the season with a torn patellar tendon. Most Washington Commanders fans thought this would elevate wide receiver Stefon Diggs into a more prominent role, but head coach Dan Quinn shot down the idea during his media availability after the bye week.
Diggs would be the likeliest candidate to step up. He's a four-time Pro Bowler and easily the most productive wideout outside of McLaurin. The Maryland product knows when to come through in big moments, and he's got the proven credentials Washington needs to get out of its slump.
He's also not getting any younger.
Commanders want to keep Stefon Diggs fresh amid Terry McLaurin's injury
While Diggs is still productive, his snaps have diminished at various stops in recent years. This is all about maximizing his involvement and keeping him fresh. It's a fine balance, but one the Commanders manage carefully.
Quinn acknowledged that the need for more from everyone is evident without McLaurin on and off the field. As for Diggs, the coach hinted that things would stay the same.
Dan Quinn said Stefon Diggs' workload won't change much in Terry McLaurin's absence. Rather, the team would look to others to step up, primarily Antonio Williams.

The Commanders are eager to protect Diggs, which is understandable. He's almost 33 now, which is ancient for a receiver. He's playing 60 percent of snaps in Washington, and that might be his limit. Anything more could lead to burnout or other issues.
It's also worth remembering that Diggs has been dealing with a hamstring injury. He returned against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football, and he's also had the bye week to rest up. That will help, but the Commanders won't give him a WR1 workload.
McLaurin will be sorely missed. The Commanders have kept things in-house regarding filling the void, but it's a fluid situation.
Stefon Diggs isn't getting any younger, and the Commanders know it
Diggs has an important role to play, and his veteran leadership will be needed more than ever. But extended involvement and playing every snap are off the table.
Given how competitive Diggs is, he will be eager for more. At the same time, he's experienced enough to know his limits, and the Commanders have to see what they have in some younger options as part of their long-term planning.
Quinn's comments were the clearest sign that third-round rookie Antonio Williams could be the biggest beneficiary. Treylon Burks could also see more targets, and tight end Chig Okonkwo is becoming a bigger feature in the passing attack.
But when quarterback Jayden Daniels needs a crucial reception in a key moment, Diggs will be his first option.
Losing McLaurin will have a ripple effect. He's been the beating heart of this offense for years, and any team would miss a player of this caliber.
The Commanders just have to make the best of it. And even though Diggs supposedly won't get an increased workload, his dependability under pressure is integral to the team's chances from here.
And when Diggs' back is against the wall, that's when you typically see the best of him.
Let's hope this trend continues over the next 11 games.
