Much has been said about the offensive line, especially after the Washington Commanders' Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The concerns are obvious, but right guard Sam Cosmi remains a beacon of hope amid the doom and gloom.
As starting center Nick Allegretti fluffed his lines and left guard Chris Paul struggled to find the required consistency, Cosmi was sensational. The former Texas standout looks healthy and back to the player who broke out in 2024, providing assured production in all phases while keeping Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter in check during their one-on-one matchups.
The Commanders couldn't pull off an upset. But Cosmi's exceptional efforts represent hope for the future.

Cosmi has gone through adversity over the last couple of years. He tore his ACL in Washington's 2024 divisional playoff-round win against the Detroit Lions, and even when he returned last season, something was missing.
He also ended the campaign injured, so Cosmi needed a big offseason to get right.
Based on this showing, he's done just that.
The strength, power off the snap, and athleticism to mirror interior rushers came to the fore constantly at Lincoln Financial Field. Cosmi barely put a foot wrong, helping right tackle Josh Conerly Jr. have a good game and giving quarterback Jayden Daniels one side of the protection to depend upon.
It didn't stop the Eagles from getting pressure with just four defensive linemen most of the time, but those problems weren't on Cosmi.
He was outstanding, and head coach Dan Quinn saw it coming.

Quinn lauded Cosmi this summer, stating he was playing the best football he's seen from him to date. He's taking it upon himself to lead from the front, emerging as an influential figure on the field and in the locker room. He's also quickly become an indispensable part of Washington's plans.
Staying healthy is key. If Cosmi can do that, a first Pro Bowl-caliber season is a lofty yet attainable objective.
Everyone is keen to focus on the negatives after losing to a bitter division rival, which is understandable. However, Cosmi's performance was an undoubted positive, and if others on the interior had shown even half that resolve, the Commanders may have secured what would have been a priceless victory.
Sadly, that wasn't to be.
Cosmi is one of the few success stories from Ron Rivera's four years as head coach and roster builder. He was drafted as a tackle, but things didn't go well. Switching him inside was a masterstroke, and the Commanders rightfully gave him a lucrative contract extension in recognition of his outstanding transition to guard.
Amid the pressure, uncertainty, and change, Cosmi remains a constant. He's dependable, gives maximum effort on every snap, and has no trouble handling some of the league's best on his own.
Containing a dominant player like Carter, not for the first time in recent years, proves that.
And Cosmi is only going to get better from here.
