Quan Martin came into the offseason with some major questions to answer. It was a make-or-break summer for the defensive back in no uncertain terms, with his future on the Washington Commanders at stake.
Things could have legitimately gone either way for Martin. The leash was short, but the introduction of defensive coordinator Daronte Jones brought fresh hope that improvements could be made.
And the signs building throughout the preseason indicate Martin is well on track to silence some doubters.

Just when all hope was fading, Martin is showing signs of life.
The 2023 second-round selection out of Illinois has fought his way back into starting consideration opposite free-agent signing Nick Cross on the defensive back end. Martin has performed well at training camp. And more importantly, he's looked much more accomplished in a typical game-day setting over the preseason.
Martin looks well-suited to Jones' schematic demands. He's not the liability fans became so frustrated with last season, and he's even come away with two interceptions as a result of his improved performance levels over Washington's warm-up slate so far.
There is a long way to go, and seeing how Martin performs in a regular-season setting will be the strongest measuring stick. But it's clear the reports of his demise may have been a little premature.
The Commanders didn't do much to fortify their safety unit this offseason. Cross was the only notable arrival, with general manager Adam Peters ignoring the spot during the 2026 NFL Draft.
It was a contentious issue, but for players like Martin, this move represented the confidence boost he was looking for.
Martin knew this summer was his last-chance saloon. His projected breakout in 2025 was a disaster, and the Commanders were right to take him out of the firing line.

But they never lost faith.
This is a big step in the right direction for Martin, but the hard work is just getting started.
He's in a contract year, so the Commanders will be keeping a close eye on his progress. Anything less than improved consistency won't be tolerated, but it's starting to look like he'll get a shot.
Very few defenders managed to exceed expectations under previous coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. Jones is already having a much more positive impact, and Martin could even become one of the primary beneficiaries if this summer is the start of things to come.
Obviously, seeing is believing.
Fans have been undone by believing the hype around Martin before. They won't be falling for it again, but after getting more than his fair share of criticism, the fight back in the face of adversity is admirable.
Whether it becomes anything more is debatable. But if this is the start of a profitable prime for Martin, it'll cement Jones' status as one of the most gifted developers of defensive backs anywhere in the NFL.
The Commanders may be placing their confidence in Martin for a prominent role once again. Let's hope he can deliver this time around.
Because that would add another intriguing dynamic to a defense that could be a pleasant surprise with Jones leading the charge.
