Commanders' rookie reveals secret behind exceptional early transition
By Dean Jones
Adam Peters received widespread plaudits for the way he navigated the 2024 NFL Draft. The Washington Commanders had a rich bounty of assets at their disposal and the new general manager took full advantage. Couple this with his severe roster reconstruction in free agency, and it's not hard to see why things are looking up.
The Commanders feel like they have a potential star on their hands in Mike Sainristil. He was one of 20 players who received gold standard marks during Peters' comprehensive pre-draft assessments. This saw the cornerback become their consensus choice at No. 50 overall.
Sainristil looks like a draft pick well spent so far. He's immediately surged into the starting slot cornerback role following his seamless transition from college to the pros. A strong start to Washington's training camp only whets the appetite further about what the former Michigan star could potentially accomplish in Year 1 of his professional career.
Commanders CB Mike Sainristil's maturity is already shining through
Things couldn't be more encouraging for Sainristil right now. The defensive back lifted the lid on the secrets behind his exceptional integration into the Commanders during an interview with Natalie Spala of 7NewsDC. This centered on soaking up as much information as possible from veterans and relying on the mentality that got him this far, to begin with.
"I don't have to act like a rookie just because I am a rookie. I can come in and learn from the vets because they're the ones that have been in the program. They know what it takes to be in the NFL. They know what a proper routine is. So I think just being around those guys as well helps you mature in a football space. And then, you know, same thing they tell you as a freshman in college. Just because you're a freshman doesn't mean you have to act like one. So, you know, having that mindset helps me set my standards from the very beginning."
- Mike Sainristil
Sainristil knows how to lead. He was the best player on the best defense in college football last season. He's got a new set of objectives to accomplish in the NFL. However, the first-year pro isn't coming in with the same attitude as your average rookie.
The Commanders want Sainristil to feature heavily immediately. His coverage capability, run support, and ability to factor on blitz packages when the situation dictates look tailor-made for head coach Dan Quinn's defensive scheme. There will be some rough moments as expected, but his credentials should ensure complications are kept to a minimum.
An old head on young shoulders would be the best way to describe Sainristil aside from his outstanding athletic intangibles. He's willing to learn, isn't afraid to ask questions, and carries himself like a pro already. Coming from a prestigious program and working alongside someone like Jim Harbaugh helped, but the sense of urgency remains despite the player achieving a significant amount at the collegiate level.
This could benefit the Commanders greatly. Their pass defense was nothing short of abysmal last time around. Sainristil's presence together with Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr.'s superb credentials should see improvements arrive quickly.
No draft pick is a sure thing. But looking at Sainristil's smooth adaptation, he could be it.
