7 Commanders players already turning heads at 2024 training camp
By Dean Jones
Jayden Daniels - Commanders QB
Jayden Daniels carries himself like a franchise quarterback. The Washington Commanders believe he's just that after taking him No. 2 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. This comes with the biggest expectations imaginable, but he's off to a tremendous start so far.
Daniels seems to take everything in his stride. There's no sign of the pressure getting to him despite having a glaring spotlight on his performance levels almost constantly. It's not perfect yet and he's still making some rookie mistakes, but the Commanders cannot be anything other than impressed by the way he's applied himself.
The accuracy, improved timing with his pass-catchers, and command of the huddle have been impressive to see where Daniels is concerned. The former LSU star threw one interception when veteran cornerback Michael Davis went down low to secure the pick. Aside from that, it's been highly encouraging.
Everyone within the Commanders knows there is much hard work ahead. Dan Quinn isn't ready to name Daniels as the No. 1 just yet, but this already seems like a foregone conclusion after leaving an outstanding impression so far.
If Daniels keeps this up over camp and when reps come his way during the preseason, it'll only raise enthusiasm about his hopes of taking the league by storm in Year 1 of his professional career.
Mike Sainristil - Commanders CB
Mike Sainristil hasn't come to the Commanders as a development project capable of making an impact over time. The cornerback wants to make his presence felt immediately and provide this defense with something it lacked last season. He's still adjusting to the rigors of NFL life, but the initial indications suggest Washington has something special on its hands.
Sainristil quickly emerged as the Commanders' starting slot cornerback. It's a responsibility he's taking seriously, coming up with some solid plays over the early stages of camp and not looking out of place whatsoever.
The Commanders are optimistic that Sainristil can become a real asset long-term after selecting the former Michigan star at No. 50 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. He matches these ambitions and has done nothing to diminish expectations since joining the ranks.
Watching how Sainristil copes when the pads go on and during preseason reps will be crucial. If the feisty defensive back comes through these challenges with flying colors, the Commanders will have no qualms about giving him significant responsibilities in Week 1 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
