Frankie Luvu - Commanders LB

Frankie Luvu was signed by the Washington Commanders to be a high-impact performer next season and beyond. Adam Peters didn't give many signings long-term deals in free agency. However, they believe the progressive linebacker can provide the spark needed to become a core foundational piece.

Luvu wasted no time in making his presence felt over camp. The former undrafted free agent sets the tone during drills and brings an energy to the defensive second level that was sorely lacking during Ron Rivera's tenure. He turned down an extension with the Carolina Panthers to see what improvements could arrive within Dan Quinn's system. This decision seems to be going well so far.

The Commanders like what they see from Luvu up to now. Players and coaches were gushing in their praise of the Washington State product. He's already become an integral piece of the puzzle - someone Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr. will be counting upon heavily to produce the goods when competitive action arrives.

There's a long way to go, but Luvu is a phenomenal presence on the off the field. Expect this trend to continue in the weeks and months ahead.

Johnny Newton - Commanders DL

The fact Johnny Newton was on the practice field for the first day of training camp practice was enough to turn heads. General manager Adam Peters said it wouldn't be long before the defensive lineman would be able to participate. Nobody expected him to pass his physical with flying colors after foot surgeries this offseason.

This is the biggest positive imaginable for Newton and the Commanders. They'll still take the cautious approach with the No. 36 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, but having a full camp to adjust and improve is only going to help his chances of making an instant impact.

Washington's defensive line wasn't a significant need before the draft. Peters felt Newton was a gift he couldn't turn down, especially considering the former Illinois star has a big chip on his shoulder after falling out of the first round.

Newton's surprising presence on the field was a significant confidence boost for the player. He's getting a crash course in NFL standards and plenty of advice from Pro Bowl veteran Jonathan Allen for good measure. Hopefully, this will have the desired effect and he can play a key role in 2024.
