Which potential head coaching candidates should the Washington Commanders avoid once their decision to remove Ron Rivera becomes official?

The Washington Commanders will be moving on from head coach Ron Rivera after the 2023 season. That's the worst-kept secret in football right now. Who comes in to replace the experienced figure after four seasons is the big question.

Josh Harris' ownership group could go with a proven head coach. They could allow an up-and-coming coordinator to take the franchise forward. Everything is on the table and the new regime will leave no stone unturned. This sort of meticulous planning and preparation is something the Commanders lacked with the absent previous owner running the franchise into the ground.

Washington will likely interview numerous options before narrowing down their shortlist. But with several other intriguing head coaching opportunities becoming available around the league, Harris and his team of benefactors need to act quickly and with conviction.

With that in mind, here are four potential options the Commanders should avoid.

Commanders should avoid Matt Nagy

  • Offensive Coordinator | Kansas City Chiefs

Matt Nagy is coming under the spotlight for another opportunity despite failing to meet expectations as Chicago Bears head coach. If the Washington Commanders had any sense, they would look the other way.

If Eric Bieniemy isn't good enough to generate head coaching consideration, neither is Nagy. The Kansas City Chiefs offense has regressed considerably since he replaced Washington's play-caller in the role. Whether that's enough to put teams off from taking the plunge when more progressive options are within reach remains to be seen.

Washington's shortlist will be long, one suspects. But Nagy should not be among those considered for one of football's most coveted openings.
