4 Commanders players that got extremely lucky during the 2023 offseason
By Dean Jones
Which Washington Commanders players got extremely lucky during a dramatic 2023 off-season period for the storied organization?
It's been a weird Washington Commanders' offseason for a multitude of reasons. The primary focus hasn't centered on football matters whatsoever thanks to the ongoing sale saga, which is mercifully almost at an end with Josh Harris' ownership going through the final documentation changes before the $6.05 billion transaction to remove Dan Snyder from the equation gets put to a formal vote among other NFL owners.
The Commanders have been restricted in terms of planning, spending, and future stabilizing the playing side this spring. Ron Rivera stated there is a plan in place, but everything is on hold until Harris' group takes charge and conversations can begin about the team's direction moving forward.
If Rivera's vision for the future doesn't match what the new owners have in mind, then landmark changes will occur quickly. But looking at the state of affairs, a few individuals were given a proverbial football lifeline with the Commanders in flux.
With this in mind, here are four Commanders players that got extremely lucky during the 2023 offseason.
Saahdiq Charles - Commanders OL
It doesn't appear as if the Washington Commanders are ready to give up on Saahdiq Charles just yet. For all the changes across their offensive line this offseason, they are providing the former fourth-round selection with one final chance to solidify a starting berth and currently have him allocated as the left guard across their revamped protection.
Charles can count himself fortunate, to put it mildly. Injuries and poor production have left confidence at an all-time low among the fanbase, so the margin for error is incredibly slim entering a critical Year 4 of his professional career.
Ron Rivera stated that Chris Paul is pushing almost everyone on the offensive line for involvement after a standout offseason so far. The dynamic could shift during Washington's training camp, but this is arguably the best that Charles could have hoped for based on his career trajectory.
