Commanders saddest games - Part 4

Commanders vs. NY Giants

  • December 9, 2018 - FedEx Field

The Commanders have suffered some brutal losses to the New York Giants throughout their history. I was tempted to select last year’s 20-12 loss in Week 15 as one of my saddest moments because Washington was coming off a bye, had a home game, and had the playoffs well within reach when they screwed the pooch. But this game from 2018 was sadder.

It was just a miserable final half of a season all around. Washington led the NFC East at 6-3 before quarterback Alex Smith got hurt. From that point on, they were in freefall. They started this game with the washed-up Mark Sanchez and benched him at halftime, trailing 34-0.

Commanders vs. Eagles

  • December 30, 2018 - FedEx Field

Is it overkill to pick the final two home games of 2018 on this list? Maybe. But no on-field contests sum up the disastrous reign of Dan Snyder better than these two.

Josh Johnson’s first throw of the game was intercepted. The Eagles outgained Washington 360-89. They had a 25-8 advantage in first downs. They had the ball for more the 43 minutes. The final score was 24-0 – and it wasn’t that close.

What’s more, it was clear to anyone in attendance that well over half the fans were cheering for Philly. Washington didn’t even bother to put on a halftime show. They just showed NFL Red Zone on the telescreens.

How sad can you get?
