After months of speculation regarding who the Washington Commanders will select at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, it is finally time to find out.
It's been anybody's guess, but a few prospects have emerged as optimal targets for Adam Peters' roster. Running back Jeremiyah Love would give Jayden Daniels a dynamic weapon in the backfield. Safety Caleb Downs might be the best overall player in the draft. Linebacker Sonny Styles is an athletic force of nature who put together a historic NFL Scouting Combine performance.
But as the big moment approaches, the pick may be someone who just makes too much sense.
Carnell Tate to the Commanders is gaining steam at the right time
ESPN insider Peter Schrager has released his final mock draft, and he has the Commanders selecting Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate at No. 7.
"There are a lot of good options on the board, including Ohio State safety Caleb Downs. But Washington has to help Jayden Daniels and get this offense back on track. The Commanders scored 20.1 points per game last season but didn't make many WR additions in free agency. The entire receiver class is available here. I think Washington could pair Tate with Terry McLaurin."
We'll start with the obvious. Tate and Terry McLaurin would make for the perfect duo of former Ohio State standouts, with the veteran taking the rookie under his wing as Washington's WR1 of the future. If the Commanders decide to move on from the two-time Pro Bowler after this season, they'll need somebody to step in as a go-to target for Daniels.
Right now, the Commanders could use any help they can find in the wide receiver room.
Rumors continue to swirl that Brandon Aiyuk might be on the way at some stage, but for now, they're a McLaurin injury away from their top option being Treylon Burks. Beyond him, it's Luke McCaffrey, Jaylin Lane, Van Jefferson Jr., and Dyami Brown. That is not exactly going to inspire much confidence among the fan base.
If the Commanders add Tate, and he pans out into at least a respectable second option as a rookie, they'll be set up nicely with or without Aiyuk. His addition would give Daniels a weapon that can make contested grabs and create separation, with hands as reliable as they come.
For both the short term and the long term, Tate is a perfect fit in Washington. Let's see if he gets the call.
