New Jonathan Allen injury update could give Commanders inspirational boost
By Dean Jones
The Washington Commanders could get a significant boost for the business end of the campaign. It's a surprising development, but one that could assist greatly in the team's high-stakes situation.
John Keim of ESPN reported that defensive tackle Jonathan Allen hasn't given up hope of returning to the lineup this season. It was initially feared that the veteran would be done for the entire campaign with a torn bicep. That might not be the case after some promising developments.
"Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, once feared lost for the season with a torn pectoral muscle, has not abandoned hope for a return in 2024, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation. Allen suffered the injury in a Week 6 loss at Baltimore, but during surgery doctors discovered that his muscle was only partially torn, sparking the initial hope for a late-season return. Further checkups have at least helped him maintain the belief that a return is possible, sources said."

A lot must happen before Allen resumes football activities. The defensive lineman needs to convince the medical staff that putting him back on the field won't increase the risk of further damage to the ailment. There's also the small matter of his conditioning, which isn't going to be at premium levels after so long away from the gridiron.
Jonathan Allen's return would be a significant boost for Commanders
If the Commanders were languishing among the league's bottom feeders — a scenario Allen's experienced more often than not since joining the franchise as a first-round pick out of Alabama — he'd probably take a little extra time. Washington has the playoffs in sight with a strong finish, so the Pro Bowler is aiming to speed up the process and do whatever he can to help his team reach increased expectations.
Allen's powers might have waned over the last two seasons, but he remains a highly respected figure in the locker room and from opposing protection schemes. His mere presence on the field frees up space for others. He's also capable of coming up big in key moments to further enhance his influence.
The fact the issue was only partially torn is a positive development. But the Commanders will err on the side of caution until confidence increases.
There's been no sign of Allen's 21-day practice window being opened. Dan Quinn hasn't discussed the topic, so this revelation could be the player wanting to put more pressure on the coaching staff to pull the trigger. That won't happen unless there is 100 percent conviction attached.
Having Allen — whether it's for a few snaps or a full workload — wouldn't be a bad thing to call upon at this crucial stage. He's running out of time with four games remaining, but the fact this became public knowledge is a sign that he might be closer than everyone anticipated.
If the Commanders can dispose of the New Orleans Saints as expected this weekend, it'll be interesting to see what happens with Allen's status. And make no mistake, Quinn will have some questions to answer about it following this latest report.
