Mike Sainristil has faced fierce criticism since his disastrous Week 1 outing. Some Washington Commanders fans are ready to give up on the third-year cornerback, and even head coach Dan Quinn called him out publicly in an out-of-character move.
Daronte Jones is not ready to throw in the towel. The defensive coordinator also highlighted the one thing missing from Sainristil's game that needs to arrive quickly.
Urgency, and a lot of it.
Commanders want more urgency from Mike Sainristil, and he must deliver
Jones, like Quinn, is confident Sainristil can respond positively. He'll need to, considering the Commanders are traveling to take on the Dallas Cowboys and their prolific receiver tandem of Georgie Pickens and CeeDee Lamb this weekend.
Given the Commanders don't really have anyone else who can fill the void, Sainristil has to step up.
Sainristil isn't letting this poor start define him. He's bullish about his chances of putting together a strong campaign, and he's working hard to bounce back at the earliest possible opportunity at AT&T Stadium in Week 2.

He will be the first one to tell you that.

But the sample size is large enough to suggest this might be who Sainristil is.
The former college football national champion at Michigan gained several impressive turnovers last season. Sainristil was also a liability. He needs more discipline in coverage, and he must be more aware of what's going on around him to improve his chances of a long future in Washington.
And as Jones said, adding urgency will help, too.

That part shouldn't be a problem.
Sainristil is a fiery competitor who punches well above his weight. The lack of legitimate size and length is a problem on occasion, but the 2024 second-round pick never backs down from a fight.
But if he shows even the slightest hesitancy against the Cowboys, quarterback Dak Prescott will have no trouble exploiting it.
Dallas will have watched last week's tape. It would be a surprise if they haven't identified Sainristil as a weak link, especially with how well free-agent signing Amik Robertson performed. If the third-year pro isn't aware of this, he should be. And he has to do something about it.
The Commanders will try to insulate Sainristil, but Jones can only do so much. He still has to execute effectively, know his assignments, and somehow cope with Pickens and Lamb whenever they line up opposite him.
And if Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer had any sense, he'd do that on every snap.
We've reached a critical point in Sainristil's career. He's always been a feast-or-famine defensive back, but he's now becoming a weak link. That is a big problem, and it's not what the Commanders had in mind when they made him the No. 50 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The time for half-measures is over. Either Sainristil steps up, or the Commanders will find someone who can.
And from Jones' standpoint, it all starts with an urgent desire to rise to the challenge.
Nothing else will do.
