Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn isn't exactly known for calling out or criticizing his players in public. That's why his recent comments about cornerback Mike Sainristil's ongoing struggles carry so much weight.
This was incredibly telling. And it may be one last desperate attempt to create enough urgency to keep Sainristil's starting aspirations intact.
The Commanders' defense improved significantly against the Philadelphia Eagles, especially across the front seven. The secondary was less stable, and Sainristil once again emerged as the weak link.

And Quinn's criticism is the biggest sign yet that patience is wearing thin in the building.
Sainristil is a competitive guy. Nick Saban called him the best pound-for-pound prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft, citing his exceptional production at Michigan and his role during a convincing college football national championship triumph under Jim Harbaugh.
Things were promising for Sainristil as a rookie. Things haven't gone according to plan since, and the woeful start to Year 3 of his professional career hints at just how much hard work is ahead for the versatile defensive back.
This is a critical moment in Sainristil's career. These subpar efforts cannot continue much longer, and it'll take all the resolve he has to make the needed improvements.
Even though Quinn couldn't hide his disappointment with Sainristil's lack of awareness and poor coverage, he still believes more is possible. He also thinks the player's mindset could be the catalyst for brighter fortunes, with his back now firmly against the wall.
"Mike's a very good competitor. I'm certain that we will (improve), but to have that type of play and just not have the right focus at the right time, completely not acceptable."
If Quinn spoke like this in public, the tone may have been even harsher to Sainristil behind the scenes.

And in a year where so much is riding on the Commanders making legitimate progress, Sainristil cannot afford to make the same mistakes again.
This was also a hallmark of Sainristil's 2025 season. He recorded multiple interceptions to lead the team, but they were eclipsed by the large number of explosive plays conceded. Based on his first outing, the necessary growth hasn't arrived, and a section of the fan base is now ready to give up on him.
That may not be an opinion shared in the building — not yet, anyway. But being challenged in front of the media by your head coach is never a good sign.
And now, we're about to find out what Sainristil is truly made of.
Sainristil has no time to wallow in pity. The Commanders travel to the Dallas Cowboys this weekend, where the 2024 second-round pick will lock horns with the prolific wideout tandem of CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens. This could be a big problem, and quarterback Dak Prescott will surely test him early and often when the corner is on the field.
The Commanders have no option other than to keep Sainristil in the fire right now. Trey Amos is on injured reserve, so unless Jones feels confident about getting Fabian Moreau more involved, nobody else can fill the void.
That all but guarantees Sainristil a chance to right this glaring wrong. Whether he can or not will have massive ramifications for his long-term outlook.
