Jordan Magee could be the odd man out amid the Washington Commanders' upgrades at linebacker, at least in terms of starting involvement. However, the third-year pro is doing everything he can to change this narrative.

When probed about which players have stood out over Washington's early offseason program, Dan Quinn named Magee among them. The head coach has been impressed by the way he's applied himself, and his progress will be closely monitored over training camp and the preseason.

The Commanders still see some untapped potential in Magee. He's got the physical tools needed to be impactful, and Daronte Jones' defensive scheme promises to be very linebacker-friendly.

Jordan Magee is looking for an increased role in crowded Commanders' LB room

It's a crowded unit after the additions of free-agent signing Leo Chenal and No. 7 pick Sonny Styles, but Magee is catching the eye enough for now.

Magee's spot on the 53-man roster was never in jeopardy. This isn't about that. It's about taking the next step toward becoming a consistent performer in the defensive rotation. The flashes last season were positive, but these need to become more consistent.

Washington has a better-looking defense after some impressive offseason acquisitions from general manager Adam Peters. It was his biggest priority above all else, and it's made the margins finer for everybody. This is a sink-or-swim scenario for Magee, and the Temple product is responding positively to the challenge.

It's hard to gauge what the Commanders have in store for Magee. But that's what makes it so fascinating.

Styles is the franchise cornerstone with incredible traits. Frankie Luvu and Chenal will line up alongside him, whether it's a 3-4 or 4-3 front. Magee is next in line, and Jones should find a way to maximize his outstanding athleticism within a system designed to be aggressive.

That should be right up Magee's alley. But the hard work to cement his status is just beginning.

Fans should get a broader indication of what Magee might be capable of when the pads go on at training camp. The Commanders will get him some work in the preseason, which is the perfect chance to see how he's mastering the scheme. He'll be on the squad, but his role will be determined by the improvements he makes as the tempo intensifies.

Quinn is suitably impressed so far. That's a big confidence boost for Magee, and Year 3 is typically the time when players are truly comfortable. Nothing is set in stone, but he can take great heart from the positive impression he is making on those in power.

Hopefully, this trend continues, and Magee can finally turn his promise into something more.
