The Washington Commanders' decision to sign cornerback Isaac Yiadom from the practice squad to their active roster sent an unmistakable message. Those in power were not satisfied with the Week 1 performance, and the stakes have risen.
Yiadom is a well-traveled cornerback. He's never been a world-beater, but he's experienced and can play well in the defensive rotation or on special teams. If the former Boston College standout has been called up this quickly, he's obviously made a good impression.
And the corners who underperformed against the Philadelphia Eagles are now nervously looking over their shoulders.

Amik Robertson and Rasul Douglas performed well, especially in the former's case. Mike Sainristil did not, and the frustration was big enough that head coach Dan Quinn criticized him in public.
With the Dallas Cowboys' potent wide receiver George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb up next, the Commanders have given themselves another option. And even though Yiadom would be thrown into the proverbial fire if he saw the field, he has more size and length than anyone else in the cornerback room besides Douglas.
This might be crucial if Sainristil or Robertson get exposed.
Washington isn't in a position to sit back and let things play out. They have too much riding on this season, and starting 0-2 would be disastrous. Yiadom may not be able to solve every issue, but it's another body who knows how to slot in at a moment's notice.
It's not the perfect answer, but it will have to do for now. Especially with 2025 second-round selection Trey Amos currently on injured reserve with an ankle sprain.
Both Quinn and defensive coordinator Daronte Jones believe Sainristil can turn things around if he adds some extra urgency to his game. But general manager Adam Peters was right to acquire a contingency plan quickly if Lamb and Pickens get the upper hand at AT&T Stadium.
Expecting miracles from Yiadom is unrealistic. He played just 16 percent of defensive snaps in 14 games for the New Orleans Saints last season. The 2018 third-round pick gave up an 86.7 percent completion rate and a 133.1 passer rating when targeted. But he is long and physical, which might be enough if his number is called.
And if this lights a fire under Sainristil or any other cornerback in a prominent role, that's an added bonus.
The situation remains precarious for the Commanders. They know the danger Pickens and Lamb possess, and quarterback Dak Prescott has torched Washington throughout his career. The defensive front seven has to apply pressure, which they did effectively versus Philadelphia, but the coverage has to do its job against arguably the league's best wide receiver duo.
Anything less, and the Commanders will have a big problem. And then, it wouldn't be surprising to see Yiadom introduced at some stage.
Time will tell on all fronts.
