Sonny Styles is undeniable.

The Washington Commanders needed a little bit of good luck to get their hands on linebacker Sonny Styles at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. When general manager Adam Peters saw the chips move in his favor, there was no hesitation.

And even a bitter former rival couldn't deny the perfect fit between Styles and Washington.

There has been an emphasis on defense this offseason, and rightfully so. The Commanders spent decent money to find the right veteran pieces to spearhead their ambitious project under new coordinator Daronte Jones. But with future Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Bobby Wagner unlikely to return, this unit needed a linchpin to build around long-term.

Styles is precisely that.

Emmanuel Acho lauds the fit between Sonny Styles and the Commanders

This sentiment was echoed by former Philadelphia Eagles player turned analyst Emmanuel Acho. He thought the Commanders hit a massive home run with Styles, highlighting head coach Dan Quinn's accomplished credentials with linebackers, including Wagner, as a primary reason why this could be a match made in heaven.

"There is not a more perfect fit than Sonny Styles to the Washington Commanders. Who did Dan Quinn help turn into a Hall of Famer? Bobby Wagner. What can Sonny Styles do? Play linebacker with elite range, elite tenacity, elite athleticism. Sonny Styles has that speed. Sonny Styles has that size. Sonny Styles has that athleticism.

"There is not a more quality fit for a team in the first round than Sonny Styles going to Dan Quinn and the Washington Commanders. I absolutely love, love, love that pick."

The Commanders didn't exactly hide their feelings about Styles throughout the assessment process. Peters lauded his on-field ability and leadership. Quinn highlighted how well others around Ohio State spoke about him. This isn't just going to be a significant asset between the white lines; it's also going to enhance the locker room culture for good measure.

Washington's roster looks younger and more vibrant. There is an injection of energy that was sorely needed, and Styles is the figurehead. This is Jones' defense to run as he sees fit, but the influence of Quinn on the incoming rookie only raises encouragement.

Styles can do everything. Attack downhill to the ball-carrier? No problem. Rush the passer? Of course. Drop back in coverage or even cover slot receivers and tight ends? Yes. Communicate effectively as the green dot? The previous experience needs no introduction.

Wagner helped change the tide over his two years in Washington, but things have run their course. Now, it's Styles' turn to build on his good work.

And as Acho said, this looks like the ideal landing spot to become a superstar.
