The Washington Commanders may have won only one of their first six games, but they aren't giving up. They believe things can improve after the bye week, and head coach Dan Quinn will never get a better chance to beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8.
If he doesn't, speculation is already rising about what might come from another defeat.
No indications suggest majority owner Josh Harris will make an in-season coaching change. He's typically patient, and that will probably remain the case unless things completely spiral out of control for the Commanders.
Heads could roll if the Commanders cannot beat this veersion of the Eagles
But if they cannot beat a beaten-up Eagles team on a five-game losing run on Sunday Night Football, things are going to turn ugly at Northwest Stadium.
Fans are expectant. They are also restless. Some are already calling for change, while others want to see how things play out against the Eagles before drawing conclusions.
But would losing to the Eagles warrant a firing?
As for this version of the Eagles, probably.
That doesn't mean it'll happen. But it will show that the Commanders' problems run much deeper than even the biggest pessimist thought.
Kevin Sheehan from The Team 980 is among those who believe heads should roll if the Commanders cannot get the job done this weekend. Philadelphia is on a pathetic run, and they are set to be without some influential pieces once again.
Kevin Sheehan knows he shouldn't say this because of how week-to-week the NFL is, but... if Washington can't beat Philadelphia next Sunday night, "heads should roll." pic.twitter.com/V5SksgAnu0

There is no excuse. None.
And if the Commanders get beaten, Quinn will have nothing left to say.
Commanders will be a lost cause if they are beaten by the Eagles on prime time
The Commanders are favored. Quarterback Jalen Hurts is out. Running back Saquon Barkley and wide receiver DeVonta Smith might be, too. Right tackle Lane Johnson has retired, and the Eagles also traded away Cam Jurgens to the Baltimore Ravens.
Morale is low. The Commanders aren't faring much better, but they have Jayden Daniels. That might be enough.
Washington desperately needs this one.
Quinn needs a lift. The players and fans do, too. There's been plenty of big talk again this week, including cornerback Amik Robertson guaranteeing a win. But everyone is a little tired of these bold promises without much substance to back them up.
Action is all that matters now.
And winning.
Doesn't matter if it's 9-7 or 40-0. Getting a victory against a downtrodden Philadelphia team is the only objective. That is the minimum requirement, and nobody will care how it happens.
Just so long as it does.
Anything less, and the Commanders will officially be a lost cause this season.
That means general manager Adam Peters could go into selling mode before the trade deadline. It might mean firing some coaches, as we've seen with the Carolina Panthers when they parted ways with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and pass-game coordinator Jonathan Cooley.
If the Commanders are particularly frustrated, they could also part ways with Quinn.
Unlikely, of course. But if they lose THIS game, especially after coming off an extended rest over the bye with extra time to prepare, nothing could be completely dismissed.
That is the pressure facing Quinn and his players. Failure is not an option.
