Nobody needs to tell anyone in the Washington Commanders how big this weekend's game against the Philadelphia Eagles could be. It's a crossroads contest on Sunday Night Football, and head coach Dan Quinn's squad is under pressure to deliver against a beat-up divisional rival.

Fans are expectant. Veteran cornerback Amik Robertson went one step further.

Simply put, he wrote a check that his teammates better be able to cash.

Otherwise, the ramifications could be severe.

During his post-practice locker-room media availability, Robertson highlighted how much the Commanders need to win. He also said they will, and when asked whether that was guaranteed, his response was interesting.

"It has to be."

While it's a bold proclamation, this is the sort of intensity and urgency that should be prevalent across the franchise.

The Commanders are 1-4-1. They are down, but not out. The bye week came at a good time, and they are taking on an Eagles team going through significant issues.

Everything seems to be working in Washington's favor. However, they are in no position to get comfortable.

Robinson knows it. This guarantee should send a message to his teammates that failure is no longer the standard.

The free-agent signing has been a legitimate positive this season. Some fans and experts were skeptical, but Robertson quickly silenced every doubter. He's not the biggest, strongest, or most athletic. He is an elite-level competitor, and the Commanders will expect that from everyone.

Commanders' season is on the line, and Amik Robertson knows it

Their second-half fightback against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football before the bye was encouraging. They are still behind head coach Dan Quinn, and it shows. That bought him some more time, but losing to this aberration of the Eagles could be the final nail in his proverbial Washington coffin.

No one can say what would follow if Washington suffers an embarrassing loss on Sunday Night Football. But none of it would be good.

Philadelphia has lost five straight. Quarterback Jalen Hurts is out for the season. Wide receiver DeVonta Smith didn't go last weekend, and running back Saquon Barkley is another major question mark before Week 8. Their defense, though talented, is also struggling.

With the Commanders coming off their bye week, there is no excuse. Robertson knows it, and even if his rallying cry is bulletin-board material for the Eagles, it means Washington has to back it up.

The Commanders have talent. A couple more things going their way this season, and their record would look very different. But this is no time for making excuses or looking back with regret.

Quinn and his players have to move forward positively and remove any doubt.

Being heavily favored is a new experience for the Commanders this season. That brings a different kind of pressure and an expectant fan base, and the NFL will have its undivided attention on prime time.

Time to strap up, show some heart, and execute effectively.

Based on Robertson's bullish comments, the defensive back will lead from the front and drag his teammates along.

Let's hope it has the desired effect. The Commanders' season depends on it.
