Chris Canty puts Dan Quinn’s Commanders future on a 24-hour clock

This would be surprising.

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn is coming under fire once again. This time, it centers on accusations of incompetent situational management in a high-stakes moment.

Quinn denied it, saying he knew it was fourth down. Quarterback Jayden Daniels pleaded the fifth, just saying he has to execute better. But despite his explanation, the talking heads have been gunning for the respected figure after Washington's loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football.

Very few seemed to believe the excuse after seeing the video footage for themselves. Quinn clearly says "field goal," then adds, "oh, it was fourth down," before losing his composure.

Chris Canty wouldn't be shocked if Commanders fire Dan Quinn during the bye

I'm no lip-reader, but it looked pretty obvious.

And a large majority of people on social media, together with analysts, agreed.

This is absolutely inexcusable after their Week 5 debacle against the New York Giants. Quinn said that wouldn't happen again, and it seems to have happened in the very next game. He may have known it was fourth down, but Daniels throwing the football away clearly showed he didn't.

It's egregious. It speaks to dysfunction and a lack of alignment. And it's led some to believe that Quinn is now becoming an impediment to the Commanders' progress.

Former defensive lineman turned ESPN analyst Chris Canty launched a tirade on Quinn. He thought the Commanders could fire him quickly, especially given it's now their bye week. And the complete lack of communication between the coach and quarterback is holding this team back.

“I would be surprised if the Washington Commanders don't have an interim head coach over the next 24 hours. Even if he knew it was fourth down, the most important person who needed to know didn't know, and that was the quarterback."

Commanders' second-half fightback may have saved Dan Quinn from the axe

He went on, as you can see here...

Canty is alone in his opinion. A large group of fans now want Quinn removed. They have seen enough, but the Commanders' second-half fightback could be enough to earn him a post-bye reprieve.

The Commanders are still fighting for their head coach. This sort of thing matters, and even though it's not showing up in the results, this belief is why Quinn got another year to turn things around in 2026.

While the tipping point may not take much longer to arrive, making changes in-season remains drastic. Quinn is deeply respected in the building, and majority owner Josh Harris has shown patience with his other sports franchises.

That might be enough. And if the Commanders had come through late at Levi's Stadium, this error would barely have been spoken about.

Instead, everyone would be speaking about how the Commanders could potentially win the NFC East.

That is how fine the margins are in the NFL. Quinn is finding that out at his expense, and whether fans believe his reasoning or not, it doesn't change how precarious this situation is.

Canty may think Quinn will get canned in the coming hours, but it would be a bombshell of epic proportions if the Commanders pulled the trigger.

But all this does is turn up even more heat on Quinn to salvage some semblance of positivity from an underwhelming campaign.
