Stefon Diggs recently revealed that he's intrigued by the Washington Commanders and plans to check out the possibility now that his legal issues are behind him. Whether general manager Adam Peters shows legitimate interest in return is something else entirely.
But for one team pundit, he is all in on the Commanders giving Diggs a shot.
The former Maryland college standout would get an emotional homecoming if he landed in Washington. Diggs was productive last season, going over 1,000 receiving yards for the New England Patriots as they returned to the Super Bowl. This wouldn't be a long-term investment, but it would give the Commanders another dependable option alongside Terry McLaurin for quarterback Jayden Daniels to depend upon.
Commanders analyst is all in on Stefon Diggs coming to Washington
Kevin Sheehan of The Team 980 believes Diggs would be a useful addition. McLaurin's presence would give him a productive pass-catcher to take the pressure off. His ability to be impactful when it counts on game days is something else that could greatly assist the Commanders at an important time.
"[Stefon] Diggs for one season in this offense with Jayden Daniels. Having a receiver like Terry [McLaurin] with him, he's never had that. The closest would be Adam Thielen. It could be a really beneficial situation for Diggs and the offense.
"Diggs can still do it. And there's no doubt about what he is on game day. He is a big-time dog, man. This guy is truly competitive and does whatever it takes to win. Maybe he is small dose, but one year here with maybe a second year where you could move on without much pain, I'm all on board."
It would be surprising if the Commanders haven't discussed the possibility of acquiring Diggs. He's got plenty of baggage, but the accomplished on-field credentials need no introduction. What Peters must decide is whether the juice would be worth the squeeze.
Unlike the drawn-out saga with San Francisco 49ers wideout Brandon Aiyuk, Diggs is available right now. He gets the chance to come in, learn the scheme, and acclimatize to his new surroundings immediately. This also wouldn't stop the Commanders from signing Daniels' former college teammate when he eventually becomes available on the open market.
Diggs should have interest from elsewhere, too. Just how much at this stage of his career is debatable, but teams are always willing to overlook other things so long as the production is there. And looking at the wideout options at Washington's disposal, there is merit to seeing what it might cost to bring him to the club.
Time will tell on all fronts...
