It's no secret that the pressure is building around the Washington Commanders. General manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn can ill afford another subpar campaign, and the aggressive moves from both this offseason reflect this heightened sense of urgency.
But despite the coordinator changes and another drastic roster overhaul, there is one glaring issue that will make or break Washington's chances of being competitive.
Jayden Daniels is the franchise player at football's most critical position. His rookie exploits were phenomenal. His sophomore NFL campaign was riddled by frustrating injury problems, but something was missing. The quarterback is working hard behind the scenes before on-field preparations begin, and there don't seem to be any lingering effects from the dislocated elbow that eventually ended his season ahead of time.
Commanders need more around Jayden Daniels before pivotal campaign
The trajectory is still pointing up for Daniels, but the margin for error has diminished. Brad Gagnon of The Bleacher Report agreed, and he placed the onus squarely on Washington to make sure the former LSU star has everything needed to excel in 2026.
"We all know the Commanders' fate rides on a rebound from their franchise quarterback in 2026, and it's on the team to bolster the chances of that happening with that No. 7 overall selection on April 23.
"I can't imagine they're settled in the receiving corps, where they need another prime target to pair with veteran Terry McLaurin. If they don't go that route on draft night, adding a vet like Brandon Aiyuk or Jauan Jennings makes sense."
Peters rightfully prioritized the defense in free agency. The Commanders ensured some stability on the offensive line by re-signing Chris Paul, and Daniels got a new pass-catching tight end in Chig Okonkwo. However, as Gagnon rightfully states, they are short on dependability at receiver behind Terry McLaurin.
The Commanders could draft a receiver at No. 7. They could wait until the third round or a little further than that. Peters will no doubt be keeping a close eye on Brandon Aiyuk's situation with the San Francisco 49ers, especially given his reported desire to reunite with Daniels in Washington. However, that ongoing saga could drag on for months.
Jauan Jennings seems less likely, but it becomes more feasible if the Commanders are desperate. Either way, Daniels needs more, and Washington cannot leave anything to chance in Year 3 of the signal-caller's rookie contract.
Daniels becomes extension-eligible after this season. That means it won't be long before it gets much more expensive to keep him around. The clock is ticking, and although the Heisman Trophy winner's health is crucial, the importance of an enhanced supporting cast cannot be overstated.
After all, the time for half-measures is over.
