Jayden Daniels is aiming to silence some doubters who have been growing in number after things fell flat in 2025. Injuries gave the quarterback almost no chance of succeeding, and the Washington Commanders imploded without their franchise player for anything more than seven games.
Now, the page has been turned. And the Commanders are already seeing precisely what they need from Daniels in the initial stages of organized team activities.
Many changes have been undertaken around Daniels this offseason. The personnel looks a little different, bolstered by the arrivals of tight end Chig Okonkwo, the returning Dyami Brown, and third-round rookie wide receiver Antonio Williams. But the most significant change is a shift in scheme.
Commanders already seeing comfort and growth from Jayden Daniels at OTAs
Kliff Kingsbury is out, replaced by first-year offensive coordinator David Blough. This brings improved creativity, a system more in line with pro-style concepts, and greater emphasis on Daniels being under center.
It's early days, but head coach Dan Quinn is thrilled with how things are going. And for the signal-caller, the seamless transition comes from collaboration and being well-rounded enough to cope.
"I mean, I always did that. You gotta be versatile in whatever you can, and I had to be well-rounded. So, ever since I got in the NFL, it's kind of just been the thing. So, it's not anything like super new to me."
There will be bigger challenges ahead, and the Commanders could also use another productive veteran in the receiving room to enhance their chances of bouncing back. But for now, Daniels' instant comfort and growing voice are reasons enough to encourage.
And on the practice field, Daniels has picked up where he left off when things were going so well as a rookie.
Daniels is moving with purpose, precision, and ruthless intent. There is always a fun-loving demeanor and a natural aura that teammates gravitate towards. But people in the building are now seeing something different in the former LSU standout.
He's experienced criticism and questions for the first time as an NFL pro. Daniels is resolute enough to take everything in his stride, but it has no doubt provided the 2024 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year with all the motivation needed to fire back.
Staying healthy is key. After that, everything should fall into place.
At some stage, everyone has to overcome adversity. Daniels was never going to have all his own way, so his response now is critical. Based on initial impressions, he's got that eye-of-the-tiger type mindset to remind the world just who he is.
And the Commanders will be better off for it.
