The Washington Commanders are counting on first-year wide receiver Antonio Williams more than they should. Their lack of productivity behind Terry McLaurin dictates nothing less, and unless one of the unknown quantities steps up, the rookie should get chances to flourish.
Hype is growing around Williams. Analysts immediately touted this pick as a steal. He made a strong impression at Washington's rookie minicamp, and that impression is carrying over into organized team activities. There is still a long way to go, but all signs point to the former Clemson standout getting his fair share of involvement right out of the gate.
This sentiment was echoed by one respected NFL Draft analyst, who tipped Williams for big things in Year 1 of his professional career.
Commanders' WR questions blow the door wide open for Antonio Williams in Year 1
ESPN analyst Jordan Reid is extremely bullish on Williams' outlook. He pointed to Washington's lack of dependability as a reason, but the talent being brought to the table by the No. 71 overall selection can immediately thrive within David Blough's scheme.
"Outside of Terry McLaurin, the Commanders don't have a dependable threat in their receiving corps. That should leave Williams with a lot of opportunities in the team's new look under offensive coordinator David Blough. He will likely play mostly in the slot, where his route running and shifty playmaking ability can shine."
The buzz is in plentiful supply right now. It's also raising the expectations around Williams to somewhat unfair levels for someone with no NFL experience whatsoever.
While the route-running, ability after the catch, and sharpness to create separation are excellent coming into Washington, the wideout is also a rookie trying to hone his craft. Receiver is among the easiest positions to transition, but there will be some inevitable growing pains against NFL-caliber cornerbacks.
At the same time, it's not hard to see why optimism is surging.
Williams has the traits. Blough should have some schematic ideas in mind to get the football into his hands quickly. Manufacturing some touches early in the season will build confidence, and McLaurin's presence should take the primary attention of coverages to free up even more space.
There remains speculation around the Commanders acquiring another veteran receiver between now and when Week 1 rolls around. Stefon Diggs and Brandon Aiyuk are the hot names, though the latter is still under contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Others may become available as the weeks and months go on. That could have an impact on Williams' usage, but it's unlikely Washington drafted him for a bit-part role.
And he's not coming for one, either.
