Things are coming together nicely for the Washington Commanders. They've only had two draft picks so far, but there is no denying the intrigue around linebacker Sonny Styles and wide receiver Antonio Williams.
General manager Adam Peters is off to a good start. However, Day 3 of the draft is the place that separates the contenders from the also-rans. If Washington's fearless front-office leader can unearth some hidden gems to help the Commanders thrive long term, the better their chances of a quick turnaround will be.
And their next potential move may come from the pre-draft smoke around one prospect Washington is reportedly keen on acquiring.
Commanders could go through with Adam Randall if he's available in the fifth round
According to reports, the Commanders have given Clemson running back Adam Randall a higher grade than any other team in the league. He is still on the board, but with no fourth-round selection, Washington needs to get lucky once again if this is Peters' preferred choice.
The Commanders' next selection is a fifth-rounder at No. 147 overall. They never really had a shot at landing Jeremiyah Love, who went to the Arizona Cardinals at No. 3. But if there is legitimate conviction behind Randall's early promise becoming something more over time, Peters would be wise to pull the trigger.
Anyone taking Randall would be betting on upside. He's got one year of running back experience after transitioning from the wide receiver spot. There were positive flashes, but he remains incredibly raw.
With a crowded backfield as is, the Commanders could give him time to develop. That takes the pressure off, but the ceiling is undeniable once everything slows down a little for the promising prospect.
Randall's previous experience as a wideout makes him a reliable pass-catching asset out of the backfield. He runs with purpose, demonstrating sufficient burst and contact balance. Becoming more patient, allowing gaps to unfold in front of him before committing to the lane, would help him take the next step.
The former Tigers' star has all the size and athleticism you would want in a productive running back at the next level. Even so, Randall's pass protection needs significant refinement. Finding ways to improve his concentration would also assist, but the Commanders could do a lot worse with their next pick.
Peters still needs to find a cornerback. Perhaps a center to provide competition for Nick Allegretti would be more advantageous. But if there is enough intrigue in Randall, as reports suggest, don't be surprised if this is the play.
Time will tell…
