With the chances of Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love being around at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft seemingly fading, the Washington Commanders will probably have to turn their attention elsewhere in pursuit of finding another backfield weapon for quarterback Jayden Daniels.
And there is reportedly one name that those in power are higher on than most around the league.
The Commanders have almost no margin for error during the draft. They only have six picks, two of which are in the first four rounds. General manager Adam Peters could potentially trade back at some stage. That doesn't seem likely, given the lack of quarterback prospects with first-round grades this year.
Commanders reportedly have a higher grade than most on Adam Randall
Washington's backfield is pretty crowded as is. However, analyst Ryan Fowler highlighted Adam Randall as someone on the Commanders' radar. He even went so far as to proclaim that they have a much higher grade on the Clemson standout than almost anybody.
"Deep RB room as it stands, but if the board doesn’t fall their way for [Jeremiyah] Love at 7, [Adam] Randall is a player they are extremely high on to potentially add later in the draft. A player that Washington has graded in a tier “much, much higher” than a majority of clubs."
This was an intriguing development. Obviously, nobody truly knows what's going on behind the scenes. But it's not hard to see why the Commanders may be high on Randall, if the report is accurate.
Randall started his college journey at the wide receiver position. He made a minimal impact over his first three years with the Tigers, but head coach Dabo Swinney wasn't ready to give up. Clemson switched him to running back for the 2025 campaign, and the improvements were immediate.
There was a lot to like, despite how raw Randall obviously was. He accumulated 814 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. He added 254 receiving yards and three scores through the air. More importantly, he's only just scratching the surface of what he might be capable of.
The game needs to slow down for Randall, which obviously comes with more experience. Spotting lanes and being more patient can help him take the next step. He's got all the athleticism in the world, but this is all about polishing and refining once he gets to the pros.
If the report is accurate, the Commanders see something in Randall that others don't. He's projected as a Day 3 pick right now in the 5-6 round range. That's where Washington has the most capital in its limited arsenal, making it a legitimate possibility if they are enamored.
Watch this space on that one...
