The Washington Commanders need cornerback Mike Sainristil to take another step forward this season. His second NFL campaign could be best described as inconsistent, but with 2025 second-round pick Trey Amos starting the year on injured reserve, nothing but improvements will do.
How the Commanders deploy Sainristil has once again sparked debate. Some believe he's best suited on the boundary, while others are not ready to give up on him at nickel just yet.
Head coach Dan Quinn wasn't giving away much. But he did reveal that the Commanders are stuck in the same exhausting loop with Sainristil's usage.

Quinn acknowledged that the Commanders plan to move Sainristil around within new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones' aggressive scheme. Versatility will be a big part of this system, and the Michigan product's inside-out potential makes him an intriguing piece of the puzzle in Year 3 of his professional career.
However, this also comes with potential problems.
Sainristil is undersized. The Commanders knew that before they took him No. 50 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, and nothing much has changed. That makes operating in the slot difficult, and he can get outmatched as an outside corner versus some of the league's more physically imposing pass-catchers.
Switching inside and out doesn't provide much stability. Sainristil is used to it by now, but that doesn't make it any easier.
He's a football player. And if Sainristil can rectify some glaring issues under Jones' outstanding leadership, it won't matter where he's slotted into the lineup.

There is no denying Sainristil's ability to create turnovers. He anticipates things extremely well and maximizes takeaway chances. Unfortunately, the defensive back is also a weak link too often, meaning he concedes a lot of explosive plays.
That has to change, and quickly.
A front seven that generates more pressure will help, but Sainristil has to improve his discipline in coverage. Being a feast-or-famine corner won't be enough. Now is the time to put everything together, and the Commanders will be counting on him heavily to do just that.
Whether it's in the slot or on the outside, this is all about finding the right balance for Sainristil.
He can gamble, but only when the odds are working in his favor. Sometimes, giving up an eight-yard completion is better than taking a chance, risking the threat of an even bigger gain. And with two years of experience under his belt, it's something Sainristil should be acutely aware of by now.
If anyone can help Sainristil get back on track, it's Jones. He's an accomplished teacher, especially with defensive backs. If he can't get a better tune out of the third-year pro, it's pretty likely his ceiling has already been reached.
What comes next depends on Sainristil. He's a strong character who should know exactly what Jones expects, no matter what position he's in. But raising consistency is the biggest challenge he must overcome.
Anything less, and the Commanders have a big problem on their hands.
