Commanders fans may hate the truth about this dream trade pitch

It's fun to think about, but the reality is different.

One doesn't have to look far to find speculation linking the Washington Commanders to some high-profile wide receivers. Some are gaining more hype than others, but nobody knows for sure what general manager Adam Peters has planned.

That hasn't stopped fans and the media from speculating. Brandon Aiyuk and Stefon Diggs are the hot names. Both have baggage, so they come with significant risk. The Commanders will explore other options, and more possibilities could emerge as teams begin cutting players over the summer.

However, one trade pitch from an NFL analyst is one the Commanders should stay far away from at the price.

Commanders' trade pitch for Brian Thomas Jr. no longer matches their timeline

Alex Kay of The Bleacher Report became the latest in a growing line who believe reuniting quarterback Jayden Daniels with Brian Thomas Jr. makes a ton of sense. The Jacksonville Jaguars don't appear to be keen on removing him from the equation, but the analyst thought a first-round pick and a Day 3 selection could be enough to tempt them.

"The Washington Commanders should be interested, as the move would provide Jayden Daniels with a big target with WR1 upside.

"The Commanders may already have a Pro Bowl-caliber wideout in Terry McLaurin, but McLaurin is now on the wrong side of 30 and missed seven games with injury last year. The addition of [Brian] Thomas would give the club a young, high-ceiling weapon who has the potential to stick around for the long haul."

If Thomas is healthy, he could be a massive asset. The wideout developed an exceptional on-field chemistry with Daniels during their time together in college at LSU, and they remain close friends now. It's easy to see why people are connecting the dots, but it's not that simple.

The Commanders tried the big trades last year, when they were much closer than they are now. While the moves for left tackle Laremy Tunsil and versatile weapon Deebo Samuel Sr. paid off, Peters has made a concerted effort to build the traditional way this offseason.

Giving up his first-round pick in what's expected to be a generational 2027 draft class is asking for trouble, no matter how much Thomas could help. And if the Jaguars did end up listening to offers, it might cost even more than Kay's projection before they get serious.

This is fun to think about, but it's a non-starter. If the Commanders had gone deep into the postseason last year, it's a different story. But fans all know what happened next.

Sadly, that wasn't the case. And the Commanders have adjusted their strategy accordingly.
