Commanders caught up in absurd trade proposal that reeks of pure desperation

No, just no.

The Washington Commanders are still looking for more wide receiver help. Brandon Aiyuk's name won't go away, but he is still under contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Adam Peters will have targets in mind during the 2026 NFL Draft, and there is the remaining veteran free-agent pool if all else fails.

However, one NFL analyst highlighted a potential trade that would reunite quarterback Jayden Daniels with one of his most prolific college weapons.

Daniels and Brian Thomas Jr. shone together at LSU as the signal-caller won the Heisman Trophy. Both were first-round picks who took the league by storm as rookies. Their second campaigns didn't go nearly as well, leading some to speculate whether the wideout could be on the chopping block in the not-too-distant future.

Commanders projected to offer king's ransom for Brian Thomas Jr. that makes no sense

The Jacksonville Jaguars have outlined their intent to keep Thomas, hoping he can bounce back from his underwhelming year. But Gary Davenport of The Bleacher Report thought that if the Commanders were willing to throw the No. 7 pick to the AFC South club, that would change in an instant.

"Now the Commanders are in the midst of a pivotal offseason as Jayden Daniels prepares for Year 3 of his professional career. The team has multiple needs on both sides of the ball—including a wide receiver to pair with Terry McLaurin.

"If the Jaguars are serious about trading [Brian] Thomas, Pick No. 7 is about as good as it's going to get. If the Commanders believe that the 2024 version of Thomas is the "real" one, it can be argued he's worth it."

Thomas is a good player. He could be a great one, linking back up with Daniels again, but this package is absolutely out of the question.

There is no chance Washington even remotely considers giving up the No. 7 pick for Thomas. It's too valuable for a player coming off such a down year. Now, if the compensation was the Commanders' third-round pick at No. 71 overall, it's a different story entirely.

That would be more tempting, but Peters hasn't shown any inkling regarding trades this offseason. He's starting to build things up the more traditional way. If the Commanders are looking for extra wideout assistance, drafting a pass-catcher early and waiting for Aiyuk seems like a realistic outcome.

Thomas would no doubt jump at the chance to join Daniels in Washington. The quarterback would no doubt give this move his seal of approval. But parting ways with the No. 7 pick would be organizational malpractice of the highest order.

Thankfully, this is merely a speculative notion. And with any luck, it won't ever become reality.
