Commanders face the Brandon Aiyuk question nobody can answer for them

It won't be long before Adam Peters has to show his hand.

Second-team All-Pro wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is on a daily social media rampage to desperately secure a move to the Washington Commanders. Opinions on the wide receiver are mixed, to put it mildly. But everyone seems to still think he will end up with quarterback Jayden Daniels once he is eventually released by the San Francisco 49ers.

But what should the Commanders make of it all?

Nobody knows for sure, and that's the right way to go about things.

Commanders have a massive decision upcoming with Brandon Aiyuk

General manager Adam Peters knows Aiyuk well. He was part of the San Francisco decision-making process when they took him in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. A lot has happened since then, but the front-office leader is right to distance himself from this dramatic soap opera that seems to take a different turn every minute.

There are already murmurings about tampering allegations. Peters may not be involved, but Aiyuk's strong relationship with Daniels is triggering some to draw their own conclusions.

Until the wideout is released, Peters will bide his time and abide by the NFL rules. He's been in no hurry to force the issue, and that will remain the case until something is officially resolved between Aiyuk and the Niners.

The Commanders' locker room culture is strong. It was a driving force behind their success in 2024 and remained unwavering during struggles in Year 2 of head coach Dan Quinn's tenure. Aiyuk's actions don't seem like a great fit, but linking back up with Daniels in what could be his final shot anywhere should be enough for the player to change course.

Anything less, and significant questions will be asked.

If Aiyuk proves to be more trouble than he's worth, or his extended absence from football has a lingering effect, the Commanders have a problem if they opt to sign him. The concerns are glaring, but the only thing that Peters will care about is whether this player can help the team win.

Deliberations are imminent. But if the answer to this question is a resounding yes, Peters will not hesitate to bring him on board. And he won't care about the opinions of others.

Fans are divided on social media, depending on which side of the fence you're on. Radio hosts and beat writers are starting to think twice about the benefits of signing Aiyuk. It's high-risk, high-reward if everything goes well. And if the former Arizona State cannot make a better go of things in Washington, it's unlikely that another team will take him on.

Nobody knows what the Commanders are thinking. That's the way they like it.

Peters runs a tight ship, and he never discloses his plans before they become concrete. But if reports about the Niners releasing Aiyuk before training camp are accurate, it won't be much longer before Washington shows its hand.

Then, the real fun begins.
