With second-year cornerback Trey Amos' ongoing injury problems causing real concern, it didn't take long for the rumors to swirl again about free-agent Trevon Diggs potentially being an option for the Washington Commanders.

Now, after months of speculation without any substance attached, this chapter has been closed for good.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Seattle Seahawks are reportedly signing Diggs to a one-year deal. This comes after a successful workout, giving the Alabama product a chance to make his presence felt with the defending Super Bowl champions.

Commanders never considered Trevon Diggs, and they had several chances

As for the Commanders? They were never really interested, despite the constant projections and hearsay around the media.

General manager Adam Peters had countless chances to reunite Diggs and head coach Dan Quinn this offseason. The Commanders chose several other cornerbacks instead.

Amik Robertson was the first to be signed, soon after the legal tampering window opened. When more depth was required, the Commanders went with Rasul Douglas. And when Amos went to the shelf again, it was Fabian Moreau who got the call.

Not Diggs.

Not even the signing of four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs was enough to swing the pendulum. It was a non-starter, and even though Quinn and the defensive back are close, this is Daronte Jones' defense now.

If Jones didn't think this was a good fit for the defense he plans to run, a previous connection between Diggs and Quinn didn't matter. The Commanders are giving the defensive coordinator free rein to run the unit as he sees fit, and there is a level of trust attached despite being a first-time NFL play-caller.

Not even Stefon Diggs' arrival helped tip the Trevon Diggs scales with Commanders

There may have been a behind-the-scenes discussion about acquiring Diggs, but it didn't go any further. While he may have surged into an All-Pro performer under Quinn's guidance on the Dallas Cowboys, his downward spiral due to injury and poor performance over the last couple of years was deeply concerning.

In the end, that was probably too much for the Commanders to overlook. But everything turned out alright for Diggs in the end.

Seattle is desperate for cornerback depth. Working their way through signing Terrion Arnold despite the significant allegations around him is proof positive of that. Diggs needs to pick things up quickly, but this looks like the best possible environment to galvanize his career.

Would Diggs have welcomed a move to Washington, pairing up with Quinn and his brother? Undoubtedly.

But the Commanders had other directions they wanted to take.

Diggs now has another opportunity to remind people who he is. And if he gets back to anything like his old form, there might be a few teams around the league looking on with regret.

And depending on what unfolds in Washington, they might be among them.
