The Washington Commanders are in the middle of the bitter standoff between Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers, whether they like it or not. But for general manager Adam Peters, he cannot guarantee this will be the game-changing presence needed opposite Terry McLaurin in the wide receiver room.
And one team insider called on the Commanders to follow up on their changed stances on a fallback option, who is ready to go right now.
Aiyuk wants to play with Jayden Daniels. The quarterback wants him, and the Commanders are reportedly warming to the idea. However, unless they are willing to throw a late-round selection in San Francisco's direction, this saga could go on for months yet.
Commanders have been in contact with Jauan Jennings as Brandon Aiyuk saga drags on
That would leave the Commanders facing the prospect of missing out on other targets. Ben Standig, who covers the team independently, revealed that Washington has been in contact with Jauan Jennings, though it doesn't appear to be anything more than due diligence at this point. Even so, the insider thought this would be a much better — and a far more reliable — option than waiting around for Aiyuk.
"That would be Jauan Jennings, another receiver San Francisco drafted during the [Adam] Peters era. And unlike [Brandon] Aiyuk, Jennings is available, active, and reachable.
"Washington has been in communication with Jennings' camp, according to a source close to the situation. For now, Washington's interaction appears to be due diligence rather than an aggressive pursuit."
Jennings is a solid wideout. He's got the size. length, and athleticism to make a difference. Reports suggest that he may have priced himself out of the early receiver market, but it would be surprising if his demands didn't come down at this stage of the offseason.
The Minnesota Vikings brought in Jennings for a visit this week, but there have been no reports about a deal coming from it. That could provide the Commanders with the window they need to bring him on board, and Peters knows him extremely well from their time together in San Francisco.
There is another reason why Jennings is sitting on the proverbial scrapheap. He's got the talent; there is no getting away from that whatsoever. However, he's not especially liked around the league, which may be more trouble than it's worth when push comes to shove.
Peters won't care too much about that. He is all about the team. If Washington's front office leader believes Jennings would be a good fit, he won't hesitate to give him a shot.
That wouldn't preclude the Commanders from making Aiyuk an offer when he is eventually released, but it does give the Commanders a solid insurance policy if the Niners hold firm all summer.
Peters cannot leave anything to chance. If there is legitimate interest in Jennings, the Commanders need to act quickly.
