All the speculation around wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk potentially joining the Washington Commanders gathered pace once again after the 2026 NFL Draft. The San Francisco 49ers remain firm in their stance, holding onto the player in the slight hope they can get something back in return.
That seems highly unlikely, especially considering Aiyuk is reportedly unwilling to speak with other clubs about reworking his contract. He's seemingly intent on joining the Commanders, and everyone knows it.
General manager Adam Peters didn't push all his chips into the middle with Aiyuk. The Commanders spent the No. 71 selection on Antonio Williams, a slick route runner with slot expertise and eye-catching ability after the catch. That will help, but it won't prevent Washington from bringing the 2020 first-round pick out of Arizona State into the fold when the time comes.
Commanders haven't moved for Jauan Jennings, and now they may not get a chance
Just when that'll be is anyone's guess. And a potential contingency plan in the event Aiyuk goes elsewhere is well on its way to no longer being an option.
According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Minnesota Vikings are bringing in Jauan Jennings for a visit. He'll be spending tonight (Tuesday) and Wednesday with the NFC North club, which suggests the interest is mutual.
Jennings was with Peters in San Francisco, going from a seventh-round selection to a prominent feature in the passing attack. His career year with the Niners came at the best possible time, but there were murmurings about his representatives pricing the wideout out of the first couple of free agency waves.
Now that the draft is in the rearview mirror, the Vikings have made their move. This may be nothing more than a one-year, prove-it deal, but it's a great landing spot for Jennings.
He'll have space to work with Justin Jefferson on the other side. Kevin O'Connell is the head coach, and Kyler Murray is the quarterback. That's not a bad situation for the pass-catcher, who'll be aiming to secure a much bigger financial commitment this time next year.
As for the Commanders? They'll likely wait for Aiyuk. That might take months, and just where the cut-off point will be is anyone's guess.
The Niners can make this as difficult as they like. And if Peters remains resolute about not speeding up the process with a trade, this situation could drag on right up to Aiyuk's roster bonus due date on September 1.
The Commanders reportedly showed little interest in Jennings, despite his prior connection to Peters. And now, it seems as if that ship has officially sailed.
