Brandon Aiyuk saga turns ugly as 49ers face backlash with Commanders closing in

Brandon Aiyuk is stuck in limbo as he awaits his long-awaited departure from the San Francisco 49ers. Most believe he is destined to reunite with quarterback Jayden Daniels and general manager Adam Peters with the Washington Commanders. The NFC West club is only delaying the inevitable.

And one Niners analyst believes this ongoing saga is starting to paint general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan in a different light.

The Niners can be difficult, given how their relationship with Aiyuk has completely broken down. He's still under contract, and if San Francisco wants to hold out until the last minute with some slim hope of a trade suitor coming forward, that's well within the team's right to do so.

49ers analyst calls on John Lynch to end Brandon Aiyuk saga as the Commanders wait

Factoring everything into the equation, Jose Sanchez of Sports Illustrated believes the Niners are coming off extremely petty by dragging things out with Aiyuk. And it's hard to disagree.

The analyst didn't think there was any chance of a trade, especially given that everyone in the league knows how much Aiyuk's contract is and how much he wants to play in Washington. Therefore, he called on Lynch to put an end to the drama and move on for good.

"The 49ers look extremely petty keeping him aboard now. There's zero chance they will succeed in executing a trade for him, even if they were willing to receive a bag of chips for him.

"Besides, the entire league knows the Washington Commanders will be in on Aiyuk and that Aiyuk wants to go there. His connection with Jayden Daniels will draw him there. Aiyuk will be behind when he signs with the Commanders, but it isn't significant. The 49ers should just be done with Aiyuk once and for all. Put this saga to bed and move on."

Sanchez isn't alone in this opinion. The Niners have been accused of being vindictive toward Aiyuk, and rumors suggest his unavailability last season was not entirely due to his health. The longer this goes on, the more these accusations will persist.

And this is already becoming an unnecessary distraction.

The 2020 first-round pick out of Arizona State is staying quiet, working hard on his conditioning to ensure he is ready to hit the ground running this offseason. He's reportedly anxious about what comes next, and the Commanders have come around to the idea of acquiring Aiyuk after some gentle persuasion from Daniels.

It's become tedious for fans and reporters who cover both clubs. Lynch is standing his ground, unwilling to lose face by giving Aiyuk what he wants until he has no other choice. That won't prevent the eventual outcome, but it might give him some subtle satisfaction.

However unwise that may be.
