There was no room for sentiment.

The Washington Commanders have undergone significant, necessary changes to their playing personnel this offseason. General manager Adam Peters had no choice after how things unfolded during the previous campaign, and his aggressive free-agent moves set the table nicely heading into the 2026 NFL Draft.

Furthermore, his choice at No. 7 overall immediately sent one underperforming veteran straight to the hot seat.

This is no time for sentiment. If Peters' moves upset some players already around, so be it. There is no time for emotional attachment, and the margin for error is long gone. More importantly, the decision to select Sonny Styles gave the fan base an injection of positivity they were craving.

Commanders picking Sonny Styles turns up the heat on Frankie Luvu

Styles is going to help enormously. He's a dynamic force with very few flaws to his game. Any potential issues can be worked out pretty quickly once he gets into the building, so all signs point to a smooth transition and an immediate contribution.

That won't be good news for everybody, which brings Frankie Luvu firmly under the microscope.

Luvu's time in Washington has been up and down so far. He was sensational in 2024, earning second-team All-Pro honors. There were mitigating circumstances behind his regression last season, but Peters doesn't have the patience or the time to wait around on the off chance things improve. Styles joining the ranks raises the stakes exponentially, so the former Washington State standout needs to display the required urgency to stand any chance of affirming his importance to the team's plans.

More competition was inevitably coming for Luvu, even after signing Leo Chenal. He's been around long enough to know what would come next after such a disappointing campaign. Heads will roll if the same trend continues next season, and anyone not pulling their weight will be shown the door by Peters.

Styles hasn't been drafted just to make up the numbers. The Commanders are betting big that he can become a franchise cornerstone sooner rather than later. He's got the athletic tools and the elite-level mindset to repay this faith, and for the likes of Luvu, they must step up accordingly.

Anything less, and he's got a big problem on his hands.

Peters picked the right player to take this franchise forward. The board fell favorably, and it ticks off another need. But for Luvu, all it does is emphasize what a precarious situation he is walking into this summer, with spots on the line and competition for places increasing exponentially.

It'll be interesting to see how he responds, but Luvu will take on this challenge with his customary ferocity.
