After months of speculation, the Washington Commanders finally made their choice at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. And in Sonny Styles, general manager Adam Peters found the difference-maker he was looking for.

Nobody knew for sure how things would play out. Peters played his board effectively, remained patient, and struck with conviction. And one NFL Draft expert believes Styles is precisely what the Commanders need to improve their bounce-back chances.

Peters needed a little bit of luck along the way. Some projections throughout the pre-draft process had Styles slipping away from Washington later in the draft. The Commanders must have been thrilled to see the linebacker find his way through the cracks; they didn't blink when a gift was offered.

Mike Luciano of FanSided made no secret of the strengths Styles can bring to Washington. His speed, playmaking ability, and football intelligence are all traits head coach Dan Quinn looks for. Considering the scheme that Daronte Jones plans to run in Washington, the prospect looks capable of being an integral piece of the puzzle from the moment he gets into the building.

"Styles had about as perfect a combine as one could expect from a linebacker prospect, as he established himself as a 6-5 titan with wide receiver speed and the football IQ to match.

"While he doesn't show much upside as a blitzer, Styles is one of the safest players in this Draft, so much so that positional value worries shouldn't stop him from being picked in th etop 10 and becoming an instant starter."

This is a fair assessment. There is a reason why Styles was among the hottest prospects at the top end of this cycle. His college production at Ohio State is one thing, but teams also raved about his dedication and how he reportedly came across in interviews. While most prospects are media savvy these days, Peters and Quinn were impressed enough to take the plunge.

There is a long way to go, but Styles represents a good start.

The Commanders have five other selections to navigate, but getting this one right was integral. In a draft of very few sure things, the second-level presence was among the safest choices. And if he reaches the level expected, this could be another franchise cornerstone for Washington in the not-too-distant future.

Peters and Quinn placed significant faith in this scenario becoming a reality, when they could have easily gone in a different direction. But for Styles, the hard work starts now.
