General manager Adam Peters had some difficult decisions to make at wide receiver during final cuts. But in the end, the Washington Commanders kept everyone happy.
According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, later confirmed by the team, the Commanders signed Van Jefferson Jr. to their practice squad before Week 1 preparations against the Philadelphia Eagles accelerated. This adds even more depth if needed, and it also confirms Peters' masterful roster management to ensure the numbers game worked in his favor.
This will also keep some talented but unknown quantities who made the team on their toes.

Jefferson had a strong camp. The veteran has speed to stretch the field, and his timing with quarterback Jayden Daniels was on point. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to go through, with the Commanders valuing Luke McCaffrey's capabilities in the return game more for the final receiver spot.
While this was no doubt disappointing, Jefferson now gets the chance to restate his claim for involvement in Washington.
The savvy pro had a chance to explore other options, but nothing emerged in the days after the final-cut process. Peters gave him time before offering him a window back into the franchise, which ended up being a win-win for all parties.
Now, with Jefferson and undrafted rookie Jaden Bradley on the practice squad, the Commanders have two intriguing options if injuries or underperformance arrive.
This is a far cry from how things looked a couple of years ago.

The Commanders were crying out for improved depth and quality at receiver. Now, they have both, which is a testament to Peters' roster construction and his ability to assess the situation correctly across the NFL.
Jefferson may have felt he did enough to make the 53-man squad, but it wasn't to be. Even so, the Commanders recognized his performances were more than good enough for a place on the practice squad if he was willing.
And eventually, the two sides reunited.
The former Florida playmaker has more proven production in a regular-season setting than anyone outside of Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs. Given the stakes attached to Washington's season, Peters and head coach Dan Quinn won't hesitate to elevate Jefferson if others don't meet their end of the bargain.
And in all honesty, it's a nice problem to have.
Peters knows what he's doing. He leaves nothing to chance and covers every base. Jefferson's intriguing arrival on the practice squad is another example, keeping urgency high while also giving the Commanders a strong contingency plan if things don't go as planned.
This is the correct way to build a competitive roster across the board.
Jefferson wouldn't have re-signed if there wasn't a window for regular-season playing time. For the likes of McCaffrey, Jaylin Lane, Dyami Brown, and Treylon Burks, it's their job to keep the 2020 second-round pick on the fringes.
Whether they can or not remains to be seen, but the Commanders were right to bolster their options on the off-chance things fall flat.
